Droitwich Spa won by a clear margin at the Memorial Ground over a depleted Old Wulfrunians side, at the same time breaking their away hoodoo against Wulfs!
Droitwich took the game by the scruff of the neck from the first whistle, and had it not been for some fine saves from home 'keeper Aden Taylor to deny James Lemon (ferocious shot tipped onto the cross-bar) and Cory Rudd, Spa could have been 2-0 up with barely 5 minutes played.
Taylor also denied Haydn Morris and Perry Moss, who were causing all sorts of problems down either flank, whilst Charlie Tilley and Alex Dugmore also narrowly missed the target.
At the other end, Wulfs' direct approach was for the most part nullified as Spa's defence held a solid line and succeeded on several occasions with the offside trap.
Droitwich eventually did take the lead just after 20 minutes as Haydn Morris glided passed two men before cutting inside and finishing well into the far corner.
Spa kept the pressure on, and James Lemon should have found the target with a close range diving header from Moss's centre which went just wide of the post.
Lemon was further thwarted by Taylor before the break, but the 'keeper could do nothing when a corner was only cleared as far as Cory Rudd on the edge of the area, whose powerful drive through a crowd of players was deflected into the back of the net.
Matt Oliver was called upon for a couple of routine interventions, but the Saltmen were good value for their half time lead.
The course of the game continued in the same fashion, as Perry Moss beat Taylor at his near post barely 5 minutes into the second period t o make it 0-3 for Droitwich.
Wulfs's stopper did well to deny Lemon once more, Spa hit the woodwork, substitutes Ellis Blakemore and Jack Davies had some decent efforts at goal as well, but the hosts had a decent 10-minute period where they created several half chances, one of which was cleared off the line by Haydn Morris, and forced a string of corners.
The Spa defence will be disappointed to concede their first goal of the season in the way that they did, as a low cross found its way to Dave McDermott, and his deft back-heel from close range gave Oliver no chance.
Just as quick as Old Wulfs gained some courage from the goal back, Droitwich had gone up the other end to maintain their 3 goal advantage as James Lemon's powerful effort into the roof of the net gave the Spa Captain and striker the goal that his efforts had deserved, 1-4 to the Saltmen.
Spa tried for more as substitute Morgan Wood, Haydn Morris and Jonny Brookes all came close to extending the lead, but the game ended at 1-4 to lift Droitwich to the top of the League at this early stage.
On Tuesday evening, they could be overtaken if Gornal Athletic defeat Wyrley United - the Peacocks will have a superior goal difference.
Next up for Droitwich is a 3rd consecutive away game, this time at Team Dudley on Saturday 4th September (ko 3pm).
