Spa off to great start

The Saltmen made the perfect start to their league campaign with a thumping win at Wrens Nest on Saturday afternoon in sunny yet windy conditions.

It was a relatively even opening quarter of an hour with both sides having some promising attacks.
Home stopper Aaron Morris did well to deny Haydn Morris and James Lemon and Ben Tilbury also fired a shot over the bar from the edge of the box.

The hosts also spurned a couple of early chances courtesy of Chris Pike and Isaac Truss - the former missing a great opportunity after a great looping cross to the far post.

It was Spa who took the lead on 19 mins when Jordan Cox beat his man and his low cross was tapped in by James Lemon.

Lemon made it 2-0 with another close-range finish just when Wrens were starting to press for an equaliser.

The game was almost settled after half an hour as James Lemon and Wrens' keeper Arron Morris came together as the ball rolled out of play and Lemon was put to the floor. After a debate between the Referee and his Assistant, Morris was shown a red card and the home side down to 10 men.

Soon after Jordan Cox gave the Saltmen a 3-0 advantage with a tidy finish from a close angle before Connor Collins grabbed another for Spa before the break.

Spa wasted no time in adding to their lead in the second half as just minutes after kick-off Connor Collins broke the offside trap to finish well.

Several minutes later Collins completed his hat-trick to make it 0-6.

Wrens then pulled a goal back when Chris Pike got on the end of Luke Brookes's through ball and completed with a tidy finish.

Droitwich were having some joy beating Wrens's offside trap, however the stand-in 'keeper did a fantastic job saving on several occasions from Lemon, sub Brad Burgess, Jack Davies and Connor Collins.

Spa rounded off the scoring when Lemon completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes to go and due to goal difference, Spa top the table after match-day one.

A busy week lies ahead for Mark Owen's men as on Wednesday evening Willenhall Town visit us at Walshes Meadow for our first home game (ko 7.45pm) and then on Friday evening (ko 7.45pm) we are back in action in the County Cup, when an Evesham United side come to Walshes Meadow (ko 7.45pm).
