It was touch & go as to whether the match would be played and the Walshes Medow pitch certainly suffered, but after the scrappy opening exchanges, both sides adapted to the conditions and attempted to play their respective games.
Wrens Nest had the better of the first 20 minutes or so, and presented plenty of pace going forward from Arnold Chaponda and Jordan Sangha who were both a thorn in Droitwich's side throughout this game.
Indeed, Wrens could have found themselves two goals to the good but lack-luster finishing when well positioned - especially from Chaponda, let Spa off the hook.
Droitwich grew into the game as it evolved, but Jordan Cox gave the home side the lead somewhat against the run of play after 13 minutes with a positive run forward, he cut inside and drove a low shot past Todd Henderson in Wrens' goal.
The Saltmen should have extended their lead as Jack Davies, James Lemon, Jordan Cox ad Alex Dugmore were all denied by Henderson, whilst Connor Collins' 20-yard effort smashed the cross-bar.
Wrens Nest came back into the game and Matt Oliver had to be alert to deny both Chaponda and Ethan Delaney, but the visitors grabbed a deserved equalizer through that man Chaponda whose low drive gave Oliver no chance.
Droitwich got their noses back in front before the break however, as James Lemon raced clear of the Wrens defence, but when bearing down on goal Henderson saved well but the rebound fell to Cox who side-footed into an empty net.
As the first period was end-to-end stuff, the second half was a lot more controlled on both teams' parts and the opening quarter of the second half produced few chances of note. Droitwich then started to stamp some authority on the game and Henderson denied Cox and James Lemon.
Collins forced Henderson into action, but Spa's top scorer wouldn't be denied again as he finished well from distance, and then again from close range soon after to give Spa a 4-1 lead. Jordan Cox then fired against the post and Lemon touched in the rebound only to be denied by the offside flag.
Despite the margin, the result never quite looked secure and Wrens Nest were a constant threat. To their credit kept on fighting and pulled one back as Sangha's cross was met by Chaponda whose sublime control and finish gave the visitors a life-line.
Droitwich were able to contain any further threats and hit Wrens on the counter attack to seal a 5-2 victory, which was maybe a bit harsh on their Black Country opponents.
In the closing stages, Jordan Cox was involved again as his left wing cross found substitute Haydn Morris who didn't have to break stride to tap the ball past a helpless Henderson to rubber stamp the three points.
Huge credit to both sides for their efforts in horrendous conditions!
