Saltmen grind out a point

Droitwich Spa were made to work hard to gain a draw at mid-table Wrens Nest in stifling conditions at Priory Road.

The well-drilled hosts were able to include two dual-registered players from the Evostik league in their side, and they quickly adapted to the conditions and the 3G playing surface in the first half, in which the home side retained a lot of possession.

However, in truth the first period was a bit of a none event with chances at either end at a premium - only Connor Collins and Haydn Morris registered efforts at goal for Droitwich which didn't give home 'keeper Josh Raden any problems, whilst at the other end Matt Oliver was only troubled by Ethan Delaney.

Spa started the second period on the front foot with a lot more attacking intent, however on 50 minutes some poor Spa defending allowed Ethan Delaney to finish from close range.

Spa upped the ante and most of the second half was controlled by the visitors with the hosts happy to sit back and counter attack.

The introduction of Jack Davies on the hour sparked the visitors into life, with the winger having three efforts well saved, whilst Lemon and Tilbury were both denied by Raden and Haydn Morris's delightful chip shot had the 'keeper beaten but cannoned back off the underside of the cross-bar.

Spa eventually drew level when Rudd's through ball was latched onto by Tilbury who bearing down one-on-one with Wrens' 'keeper unselfishly squared to Lemon who tapped the ball into the empty net.

Connor Collins could have given Spa the lead but dwelt on his shot too long, whilst Hunt came close with a header, then Jack Davies again caused problems with a cross/shot that flew across the face of the goal but evaded the oncoming Spa forwards.

With no winning goal in sight, the hosts put their foot on the gas in the final stages and should have run out comfortable winners.

With the Spa defence all at sea, substitute Brian Ncube won an aerial battle with Oliver & Seeley and with the goal gaping and just a few yards out, he inexplicably headed over to let Spa off the hook - a contender for miss of the season.

More disorganization in the Droitwich defence was to follow in the last minute, and Matt Oliver produced a save of the season contender as he palmed away a powerful Nathan Guest drive from a matter of yards out to preserve a point for Droitwich, which given the balance of play over the 90 minutes was probably a fair result.
