Spa edge out resilient Wyrley

The Saltmen were made to work hard for the three points by mid-table Wyrley on Wednesday evening.

The visitors came quickly out of the blocks at the start of the game, and had the lions share of possession in the opening 15 minutes.

Willing runs from Gill, Rhodes and Josh Tolley cut the Spa defence which looked nervy, but managed to recover possession and snuff out the danger.

The Saltmen started to stamp some authority on the game and put together some excellent intricate passing moves which created chances for Jack Davies, Haydn Morris, Jack Allerton, Ben Tilbury and Chris Conway.

Both Allerton and Tilbury had efforts from range which went close, whilst another distance strike from Tilbury was bound for the top corner had it not been for a spectacular save from Joe Williams in the Wyrley goal.
The visitors were on the back foot, and Williams performed more heroics to keep out Morris and Conway to shut the hosts out until half time.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with the visitors starting strongly, and Oliver had to be alert to deny both Scott Gill's low cross-shot and Callum Head's effort.

A reshuffle from the Spa management team saw the introduction of Brad Burgess from the bench, and 5 minutes later the winger had two consecutive chances when well positioned but his second effort cleared the bar by some way.

He was also denied by Williams, as was Conway, Davies and Tilbury in the second half, but the stopper's best save was from point-blank range to deny Matty Hunt's header from a set-piece as Droitwich turned the screw.

A few minutes later, good work from Burgess down the right ended in a cross which found the head of Chris Conway who broke Wyrley's stern resistance.

The visitors hit back and enjoyed a good spell of possession pinning the Saltmen back in their own half in search of an equaliser.

Spa defended well to snub out any major threat, and as Wyrley seemed to tire, Brad Burgess sealed the win in the last minute; great work down the left as Callum Morris got away from his marker, Haydn Morris then picked up the scraps to tee-up Burgess up and wrap up the win.
