Spa slump to 2nd consecutive league defeat

An excellent, end-to-end game of football between two WMRL Division 1 high flyers went the way of the visitors as the Saltmen slumped to their 2nd consecutive league defeat after a fortnight's lay off.

However Droitwich took the lead as early as the 2nd minute as a delightful defence splitting pass from Ben Tilbury sent James Lemon through on goal and he finished well passed Liam Whittaker in the Darlo goal.

The lead didn't last long though as the visitors took the initiative for the majority of the first half, equalising just 4 minutes later after a superb cross-field ball from the right which found Daniel Bolzon whose tidy finish beat Oliver and went into the far corner.

Droitwich had to defend valiantly after a string of corners, and Town had the chance to take the lead just after 20 minutes as Curtis Townley brought down Luke Charlton in the penalty area.

Matt Oliver was the hero on this occasion as he got down well to his right to save Ant Follows spot kick to keep the scores level, and he had more work to do as Isaac Cooper, Leon Taylor and Daniel Bolzon all had efforts on goal.

Spa rarely threatened ad were getting over-run in the midfield with only Dan Cottrill and Jack Davies forcing Whittaker into saves as the hosts were relieved to hear the half-time whistle.

The second half was a reversal of the first however, as Spa were on top for the majority of it and carved out several excellent chances.

Only one was converted thanks to a pin-point cross from Jack Davies which found the head of James Lemon 5 minutes into the 2nd half to put Droitwich ahead for the second time.

Dan Cottrill came close with a header and then a powerful drive from the edge of the area, then Jack Davies hit the woodwork and James Lemon almost completed his hat-trick, however the visitors equalised once more somewhat against the run of play just 7 minutes later.

Matt Oliver's clearance under pressure was deflected into the path of Daniel Bolzon who had a simple finish from 18 yards to level things up.

Spa should have been ahead for a third time as Cottrill's shot was well saved by Whittaker but the rebound fell at the feet of Ben Tibury a matter of yards out but the usually deadly front-man somehow missed the target.

More pressure from Droitwich was to no avail as Darlaston took the lead and the points with a little less than 10 minutes remaining as Isaac Cooper's corner was headed home by an unmarked Luke Charlton and try as they might Spa couldn't fashion an equaliser of their own and succumbed to defeat in a thoroughly entertaining encounter.
