Saltmen lose 1st home league game in cruel fashion

This top of the table local derby started at a fast pace, with Raiders racing into the lead with their first attack on 2 minutes.

It was former Spa man Luke Molloy who got the goal, after good work down the right from Anthony Smith whose pin-point low cross found the winger who connected from close range to open the scoring.

Spa were playing some decent football and carved out a few half chances, but Lemon, Tilbury & Davies couldn't capitalise on them.

It was a nervous start from the hosts who were missing three defensive players for this encounter, and Raiders, who had precious few opportunities in the first period put the long ball game to good use looking to utilise their pacy wingers.

They went 2 up on 25 minutes as Droitwich failed to clear their lines - the ball was again worked out to the right hand side and another low cross found captain Matt Tyler who was well positioned to extend Raideres' lead.

Droitwich then played with a greater sense of urgency and five minutes later reduced the deficit when Jack Davies burst into the box, his low shot was palmed onto the near post by Lewis Pinches and Ben Tilbury was on hand from close range to tap home the rebound.

And the equaliser soon followed. A deep free-kick from Jonathan Brookes was flicked on by James Lemon into the path of Jack Davies who finished well.

The second half was, in comparison, a bit of a non-event.
Both sides played some tidy passing football but struggled to make any head-way and neither side created any major chances - the best of these fell to Raiders but Anthony Smith & substitute Roland Krol couldn't finish as the game looked to be petering out into a draw.

That was until the 90th minute when, to the bemusement of everyone in the ground, Referee Mark Groves pointed to the penalty spot for what seemed something in nothing, and Captain Mike Seeley was subsequently booked - presumably for his protests.

Anthony Smith confidently stepped up and dispatched the penalty and with seconds remaining Spa had no time to respond and suffered their first league defeat at Walshes Meadow since February.

The Saltmen now have over 2 weeks without a fixture - the next of which being a Cup match at Bromyard Town on Tuesday 13th November, ko 7.45pm, before Darlaston Town visit Walshes Meadow on Saturday 17th, ko 3pm.
