Spa record second win in dull encounter

Droitwich Spa notched their second win of the season in as many games as they overcame Gornal Athletic at the Garden Walk Stadium.

The hosts started the better of the two sides, and Droitwich struggled to find any kind of rhythm for the opening 20 minutes as neither 'keeper was forced in to any serious action - Jack Allerton and Bradley Burgess smashed their efforts wide whilst there was a similar outcome for Gornal's Matt Grainger.

It was the visitors who did eventually take the lead, as James Lemon injected some life in to the encounter when his low shot in to the far corner beat 'keeper Ashley Green.

Droitwich rallied until half time and looked alot more dangerous going forward, however the quality of the final ball was all too often lacking. Matty Hunt heading over the bar was the closest Spa came to extending their lead, but the score remained at 0-1 going in to half time.

The Saltmen picked up where they left off in the second half, with both Cory Rudd and Brad Burgess having half chances, but they wouldn't have to wait long to go 2-0 up, as James Lemon was fouled in the area and the returning Curtis Townley stepped up and dispatched the penalty expertly, although Green may have been disappointed that he didn't keep it out.

Mark Owen and Wayne Oliver made several changes after the second goal, and Spa seemed to lose their rhythm with precious few chances.
Both Callum Morris and Jack Davies looked lively - the former feeding another substitute Dan Cottrill but he didn't make the most of his chance, while Lemon couldn't quite get on the end of a low drilled cross to make the score-line more respectable.

At the other end, Spa defended well and restricted Gornal to a solitary chance of note, when substitute Ross Harris fired wide when well positioned.

The game was far from a classic and will not be remembered by those in attendance (including a sizeable away following), but Droitwich got the job done, came home with all three points and now they prepare for an extremely tough looking fixture at Darlaston Town next weekend - another side with a 100% record.
