Cirencester Town 5-1 Droitwich Spa

Droitwich dominated in the Cotswolds

The Saltmen suffered a heavy defeat in the Cotswolds on Saturday at Cirencester Town.

It was to be a game of two halves, as a confident and controlled first half showing from Andy Crowther's men saw them have the better of the early exchanges, and Cory Rudd hit an effort from range over the cross-bar.

The Centurions were then indebted to a fine goal-line headed clearance from Ed Scott after an inswinging Josh Hurdman corner that had home 'keeper Ronnie Newbery beaten.

Cirencester replied with a Harlie Price free kick, that Rogerson did well to save low down, however the follow up fell to George Peare who, from yards out, managed to put the ball over the cross bar.

Town would live to rue that miss as moments later, Sam Hurdman picked up the pieces from a half-cleared corner and struck a low drive from 25-yards through a crowd of bodies into the net mid-way through the half.

Droitwich defended well, but Cirencester squandered another big chance when top scorer Harlie Price hit the woodwork when well placed.

Spa could have extended their lead in the closing stages, but Kyle Pitts produced a fine last ditch tackle on Alex Dugmore just as the Spa striker was ready to fire a shot at goal.

The second half started in the worst possible way as Theo Jeremy, Cirencester's stand-out player, broke down the left flank and produced a low cross and simple tap-in for Price to even up the scores.

From then on, it was all Cirencester, and Spa had Rogerson to thank for keeping the scores level as he denied Price then Jonty Welch.
Price should have put Town in front after yet more great work from Jeremy gave him a carbon copy chance, but he somehow fired wide.

Against the run of play, Droitwich thought that they had got their noses in front when Dugmore produced a brilliant header into the bottom corner from Moss's cross, but to the bewilderment of all in attendance, the referee had seen an infringement and the goal was chalked off.

Within 5 minutes Town got their noses in front when Fraser Bell's deep free kick found the head of Price who this time made no mistake, and the Centurions extended their lead when yet another Jeremy cross was turned home by Aidan Bennett.

Price completed his hat-trick on 85 minutes to make the score 4-1 from a near post finish, and it got worse still for Spa when Kyle Pitts rounded off the scoring with two minutes left to play.

A nightmare last 20 minutes for Andy Crowther's men, who failed to react to Town's tactical changes at the break and lost their concentration after the disallowed goal.
To rub salt further into the wound, goalkeeper Dom Rogerson, who despite the score-line made some fantastic saves, after lengthy treatment towards the end of the game had to be carried off the pitch.
We hope that it won't be a serious injury and that Dom makes a full and speedy recovery.

Droitwich hold on to second place in the League for the time being, one point behind leaders Roman Glass St George with a game in hand, whilst Cirencester closed the gap to the play-offs to just 4 points as Corsham fell to a surprising defeat at Highworth.
The Saltmen are 10 points clear in the play-offs at this stage, and will hope for a similar reaction to that of the last heavy defeat, when Spa went on an 11-game unbeaten run.
Next up is a home game against Tuffley Rovers on Saturday 29th April (ko 3pm).
