The Wychavon derby hosted at Kingy’s this Saturday ran anything but smoothly, however Spa emerged 4-1 winner.
Following a remembrance commemoration with a two minute silence, the game began and inititally lay mostly in the hands of Pershore Town.
They ran most of the early stages of the game, frequently getting in behind the Droitwich defence.
However, in the 17th minute, Jack Davies was brought down in the box following a clever interchange with Charlie Tilley resulting in a penalty that was expertly converted by Ben Tilbury.
Spa narrowly avoided losing their lead in the 20th minute, as Calum Harper missed a 1 on 1 with Dom Rogerson.
Harper would live to regret this further as a mere minute later. Sam Hurdman put Perry Moss through – and after turning his marker inside out struck a shot that was parried by Cunneen and into the net and the lead was doubled for the Saltmen.
That two goal advantage did not last for long as Reece Day managed to close the gap between the two teams in the 23rd minute after poor defending leaves room for him to slot a calm finish into the net.
The game halted in the 34th minute as Pershore’s Nigel Hinkelow went down and received lengthy medical attention in a stoppage that lasted 30 minutes until Hinkelow was stretchered off and the game recommenced. Everyone at Droitwich Spa wishes Nigel Hinkelow a speedy and painless recovery.
Spa dominated the remainder of the half, having a multitude of chances.
Just as fans began to prepare for half time, a beautiful team build up leads to James Lemon being put through 1 on 1 with the keeper and finishing professionally to restore the two goal lead to close the half.
An exciting first half did not lead on to an exciting second, as almost nothing of note occurred until the 74th minute where a tantalising dummy from James Lemon after substitute Haydn Morris's low cross left room for Josh Hurdman to strike and extend the lead for Spa to 4-1 in front of the crowd of 276.
Pershore had several excellent chances in the final stages of the game, but were unable to claw anything back – giving Spa their 2nd consecutive win, putting them 2nd in the table purely on goal difference.
Droitwich have won the last 7 of their home games, and will be looking to extend this on Tuesday evening against Worcester Raiders in the Worcestershire Senior Cup 2nd Round (ko 7.45pm). The Saltmen are at home again on Saturday when lowly Thornbury Town are the visitors (ko 3pm).
