Five unbeaten for Saltmen after victory over play-off rivals

By Caitlin Valle

Droitwich Spa hosted Corsham Town at Kingy’s on Saturday, searching for a strong result to hold on to 2nd position in the League.
The game started unfortunately, as Corsham’s Raphael Oppong collided with the advertising boards, sustaining a serious injury. After a stoppage in play lasting 25 minutes, Oppong was escorted off the pitch to an ambulance.

The club wishes to thank both sets of medical teams for their assistance, and hopes for a speedy and painless recovery for Raphael.

Following the recommencing of the match, Spa seemed as if they hadn’t left the dressing room, with many early chances falling against them, particularly from Pele Kouisseoue. However, on the 15 minute mark, Reiss Taylor- Randle latched on to a hopeful ball over the top and chipped the Corsham goalkeeper to give Spa the lead against the run of play, for his second goal of the season.
Corsham kept pressing for the remainder of the first half, with Ben Tilbury having to make two last ditch tackles to quash opposition attacks.

The half ended 1-0 to the Saltmen, but as the second half began, Corsham continued to cause the Spa defence further problems, which Dom Rogerson was equal to.

In the 59th minute, Alex Dugmore found himself 1 on 1 against opposing keeper Ryan Clarke, who brought him down and earn himself a straight red card. The ‘keeper had escaped in the first half, where he was only yellow carded for a deliberate handball.

The Quarrymen were forced to put Neikell Plummer in goal, and the attacker turned goalkeeper did well when he held on to an attempt from Taylor- Randle, but he was unable to keep out Nathan Binner following some pinball in the box in the 71st minute. A pass from substitute Joe Hurdman allowed him to get the final touch to put Spa up by 2 goals, which was also Binner’s 2nd goal of the season since returning from injury.

A few chances at either end came and went before the end of the game, until a brilliant charge down the right from Binner left the goal at James Lemon’s mercy, who took his opportunity cleanly for his 3rd of the campaign, and Spa’s third of the game to settle the final score, in front of a crowd of 206.

Droitwich have now gone 5 games unbeaten, are the Division’s joint top scorers with 25 in 11 games.

The next game for the Saltmen is against top of the table Roman Glass St George at Kingy’s next Saturday (ko 3pm).
