Spa travelled down to Wiltshire in the unusual position of being beaten heavily last time out.
The last couple of weeks have been a trying time for the Saltmen as circumstances have conspired to deprive manager Andy Crowther of the option to select well over a third of the club’s regular first
team starters.
The manner of the home defeat to an impressive Slimbridge side will have done nothing to boost confidence ahead of this long road trip.
Objective number one was to avoid consecutive defeats and, in a game of few chances, Spa
keeper Dom Rogerson was rarely tested on his return to action and the introduction of new signing Curtis Smith, at right back, reduced the impact of losing Jack Brighton.
It took 23 minutes for Spa to create anything like a goalscoring chance, when a Josh Hurdman
effort was cleared off the line with Town keeper Gargett beaten.
A couple of minutes later Josh’s
corner kick evaded everyone in the box and narrowly missed going in at the far post.
Highworth were next to mount an attack but Stevenson could not direct his shot on target.
Deadlock was almost broken on 30 minutes as slick interplay between Alex Dugmore and Josh
Hurdman resulted in the latters dipping strike from distance just clearing the bar.
Just before the break Josh was denied as his effort was well saved by Gargett.
The first significant event of the second half occurred on 46 minutes when Nathan Binner made his own return from injury, replacing Reiss Taylor-Randle.
Joe Hurdman hit the side netting on 71 minutes and Ben Tilbury went even closer when his
header hit the woodwork on 75 minutes, sparking a goalmouth scramble, but Town got bodies in the way and managed to clear to safety.
Late chances came to Cory Rudd and Danny Barnes but the Droitwich men could not force a
winner and the game ended in a goalless draw.
It’s been a long time since Spa were involved in a goalless draw but it represents mission
accomplished ahead of the Wychavon derby at Pershore Town on Bank Holiday Monday.
