Droitwich Spa 2-1 Fairford Town

DSFC Admin13 Aug - 08:37

Third straight win for Crowther's side

Spa recorded a third consecutive league win but Fairford made it very difficult for every one of the ninety minutes.

The visitors are a good side and it's difficult to understand how they remain without a win.
Well organised from back to front, Fairford started the game strongly, dominating possession. The Droitwich faithful had their hearts in their mouths when an Alfie Presley effort took a layer paint off the outside of the post.

With the Saltmen struggling to make headway, the visitors came close again when a powerful 17th minute drive from Joah Hall just cleared the crossbar.

Stung into action Spa clawed their way into the game and, with 20 minutes on the clock, strong strikes on goal from Reiss Taylor-Randle and James Lemon were repelled as the visitors’ defence put their bodies in the firing line.

In what was becoming a cut and thrust affair, it took 30 minutes for the deadlock to be broken. In the game’s one truly first class move, Jack Brighton’s pace saw him outstrip the Fairford back four to collect a fine through ball from Ben Tilbury. A good cross and quality lay off took the ball to Corey Rudd whose clean strike curled away from Connor Johns in the Fairford goal finding the top corner of the goal, giving Spa a 1-0 lead.

The hosts began causing the visitors some real concern.
After 35 minutes Spa leading scorer Alex Dugmore uncharacteristically missed a racing certainty of a free header from a perfect Josh Hurdman cross. However, moments later, Droitwich midfield lynchpin Charlie Tilley’s deft finish back across goal extended the Saltmen’s lead to 2.
The lead could have been stretched further but for an excellent Johns’ save on 42 minutes which kept Town firmly in the contest.

The second half began much as the first half did, with Fairford making a number of threatening advances deep into Spa territory.
The home side rallied and on 59 minutes skipper Lemon was inches away from converting Josh Hurdman’s teasing far post cross.
That might have been game over but with around 10 minutes still to play, Tom Chamberlain halved the Droitwich lead, his smart finish evading new Spa keeper Dominic Hill and giving him no chance.

The closing minutes saw a frantic effort from the visitors who showed plenty of desire and neat football in their attempts to equalise. But the home side’s grit and determination saw them scrape home, much to the relief of most of the 227 in attendance.

This may not have been a vintage Droitwich performance but there was plenty of character in evidence which ultimately allowed them to hold on to their lead and remain in the top five.

Another tough challenge awaits as Spa welcome Longlevens to Kingys on Saturday 16th August (ko 3pm) when the lads will look to extend to their winning streak.
