Super six Spa on fire

The Saltmen produced another dominant performance to sweep aside relegation threatened Wellington on Tuesday night.

Droitwich scored 6 goals away from home for the 2nd time in the space of four days to extend the lead at the top of the table to 9 points with six games remaining, however the game got off to a poor start as with 9 minutes played, Wellington opened the scoring.

Spa had taken the initiative from the off, with the hosts sitting deep looking for an opportunity to hit on the counter attack whilst absorbing pressure and that tactic paid off when Droitwich lost possession on the half way line, the ball was switched to the right flank where a fantastic ball to the far post from Adam Hockey gave Sam Griffiths a simple header from close range that gave Rogerson no chance.

Droitwich didn't get phased by conceding and immediately went in search of an equaliser; Perry Moss's fierce volley was deflected wide, and from the resulting corner the visitors saw two efforts scrambled clear off the goal line.

The pressure paid off on 23 minutes when Josh Hurdman showed fantastic tenacity to keep the ball in play at the by-line, the home defence stopped and Hurdman's crossed was fired home from close range by Alex Dugmore.

More efforts were to follow as Jay Sauntson hit the post, Nathan Binner fired wide when well position and home stopper Jack Oxenham denied Hurdman from close range with a fine save with his legs right before half time.

Droitwich continued their dominant display in the second half and with Wellington deploying the same tactic, it was a matter of time before Spa would get their noses in front for the first time in the game.
On 50 minutes, Oxenham parried out a low cross out only as far as Binner, but he blazed over from 10-yards out.

Oxenham then produced the save of the game as Cory Rudd hit a 30-yard dipping effort, destined to nestle under the cross-bar but the back-peddling 'keeper tipped it over the cross-bar.
From the resulting corner however, Dugmore rose highest to head into the far corner for his 4th goal in the last two starts, and his 30th goal in 30 games for the season.

Spa didn't let let and on the hour mark, Hurdman's effort was cleared off the line but Ben Tilbury couldn't miss the weak clearance from 4 yards out to make it 1-3.

Wellington tried to respond, however Droitwich were commanding at the back; the closest they came was an effort from Alhag Jammeh which cleared the cross-bar.

James Lemon then forced a penalty with around 10 minutes remaining which Perry Moss converted for 1-4, before a spectacular over-head kick from Carlos Moreira at the end end went just wide.

It was 1-5 with 84 minutes on the clock as a low effort from Josh Hurdman bounced just before Oxenham and into the net, and just 60 seconds later two substitutes combined when Matt Fusco's flick forward allowed Lemon to race clear of the defence and finish clinically to round off the scoring.

The lively Otto Parry almost pulled another goal back for the hosts but Rogerson produced a fine save with his legs to deny him.

Nathan Binner had the last chance in injury time to make it 7, but he somehow missed the target from a matter of yards out after great work from Joe Clayton.

The Saltmen are back at Kingy's on Saturday (ko 3pm) when they turn their attentions to the last 16 of the Marsh Challenge Cup.
They will face a tough task as they host Premier Division leaders and FA Vase semi-finalists Hartpury University.
