Spa back on form

After three games without a win and a 10-day lay-off, The Saltmen were back with a a vengeance as eventually they comfortably saw off Wellington at Kingy’s on Tuesday night.

The visitors that had two former Spa Development players in Aston Amies and Dan Ololoko, came quickly out of the blocks, however Droitwich came closest to taking the lead when Perry Moss fired wide after he pounced on a loose ball, but Spa only had to wait until the 5th minute to open the scoring as Moss raced clear down the right, his low cross was flicked on by Alex Dugmore and Charlie Tilley smashed away the loose ball from close range.

Cory Rudd then saw a well struck attempt cleared off the line then more heroic defending produced another block before clearing away.
Alex Dugmore scored his 20th League goal of the campaign as some precise build up play set him away to slot past the onrushing Jack Oxenham, who got a hand to the shot but couldn’t stop in from ending up in the net.

Perry Moss was set to extend Spa’s lead further but for a perfectly timed last ditch tackle from Luke Bufton to deny him.
Droitwich looked the more dangerous going forward throughout the evening, but the Tangerines strung together some tidy passing moves in the first half particularly and fashioned a comeback on 35 minutes when Carlos Moreira beat the offside trap and produced a fantastic finish across goal and into the bottom corner.

The Saltmen were quick out of the blocks in the second half and dominated Wellington, and the visitors defended valiantly to stop the scoreline from running away; the Tangerines’ defence put their bodies on the line twice in quick succession to block James Lemon, then Perry Moss from certain goals; the latter another goal-line clearance in the opening stages.

Perry Moss then saw a goal bound attempt deflected wide, and Jay Sauntson was a whisker away from scoring his long awaited first Droitwich goal with yet another deflection to deny him.

On the hour mark it was 3-1 when Droitwich out-muscled their opponents, Wellington were caught short and Charlie Tilley slotted in from close range.

Oxenham then pulled out a great save to deny Moss and Nathan Binner’s shot from the follow-up was blocked, then Sam Griffiths forced Dom Rogerson into his only noteworthy save of the night as the Spa stopper got down well to save a powerful low drive.

The action returned to the other end of the field, and another fantastic save from Oxenham to tip over a Ben Tilbury header from close range, however with just 5 minutes left to play, Spa’s substitutes combined as Josh Hurdman’s low cross found Tilbury ideally placed to touch home from 6-yards out for his first goal since returning to the club from Pershore Town.

Droitwich had two more opportunities to extend their lead before the end but both Matt Fusco and Hurdman couldn’t find the target, but on the balance of play the score-line of 4-1 was correct, and Spa returned to their early season form that they will look to take into Saturday’s home game against Cheltenham Saracens (ko 3pm).
