5 goal success ensures Spa pull 5 points clear

The Saltmen came away from a tough trip to in-form Wantage Town with all three points on Saturday afternoon.

The game couldn't have got off to a better start for Andy Crowther's men, as within two minutes some neat play down the right flank between Jack Brighton & Josh Hurdman allowed Alex Dugmore to provide a simple tap in for Perry Moss.

The hosts responded as Callum Crook forced a good save from Dom Rogerson at the near post, and the Freds continued to dominate possession for the majority of the first period, but without seriously troubling the Spa stopper.

Cory Rudd was sin-binned for dissent, and in the 31st minute a cross field pass fell into the path of Owain Wheeler who hit a powerful first time volley into Rogerson's top corner to even up the scores, whuch was no less than the home side deserved.

Wantage had the ball in the net twice more in the opening 45 minutes, but both times the referee's whistle denied them for infringements.

If the first period was cagey, the second half was bizarrely full of goals, despite chances being at a premium.

Josh Hurdman had the first effort but he put his attempt over the bar, then Town replied through Stephen Robertson who should have hit the target with a close range header.

Droitwich then ran away with the game thanks to four goals in just 19 minutes; firstly Josh Hurdman latched onto a through ball to calmly finish past Tom Rees on 66 minutes, then just 5 minutes later Perry Moss netted his 2nd of the afternoon with a close range volley.

Hurdman then contributed his second of the afternoon as his low free kick evaded everyone to nestle into the bottom corner, and the Spa youngster scored his hat-trick with just Rees to beat on 85 minutes.

Notably, both James Lemon and Matt Williams were brought on after recovering from injury, however they couldn't deter a committed Wantage side from reducing the arrears late on as first Jack Fountain, the Callum Crook fired two unstoppable strikes in to Dom Rogerson net, but it proved too little to too late for the Freds and Droitwich returned home with all three points, despite being far from their best.

The victory means that the Saltmen continued an unbeaten start to the season and now have a 5-point lead at the top of the table after 11 games ahead of Tuesday's trip to FC Stratford (ko 7.45pm).
