Droitwich Spa 1-1 Cheltenham Saracens

DSFC Admin10 Feb - 06:48

Two points dropped for stuttering Saltmen

Droitwich Spa were unable to make the host of chances pay, and had to settle for a point against Cheltenham Saracens on Saturday.

The hosts started the game brightly and dominated the first half. Alex Dugmore had the first chance when he manoeuvred himself in front of Lewis Hitchman but his flicked header went just the wrong side of the cross-bar.

Spa would take the lead in the 16th minute after Josh Hurdman's strike was parried by Harvey Need only as far as Perry Moss who tapped home from close range.
The visitors could have been on level terms straight from kick of as Lucas Price rode 3 challenges only to be denied by the legs of Dom Rogerson.

Droitwich then felt aggrieved when denied two strong penalty claims as first Perry Moss was pulled back, then Alex Dugmore grounded in the penalty area mid-way through the half.

Cory Rudd then hit a free kick just off target, then Need was on hand to deny Charlie Tilley from close range after some neat build up play and the last attempt of the half fell to Lewis Phillips who also forced Need into a save, however with the vast majority of the possession, Saracens defended well whilst Spa struggled to find that final ball.

The Saltmen continued on the front foot in the second half in search of a killer second goal; Josh Hurdman's shot was deflected wide, then Need saved a second attempt of the afternoon from Phillips, but again the Cheltenham back-line held firm.
A third penalty appeal of the afternoon as Tilley was tripped on the by-line by Hoskins, but again the match official waved away the protests.

The visitors grew into the game but failed to fashion any good goalscoring chances, but were handed a lifeline with 15 minutes to play as Sauntson was adjudged to have fouled Price in the area and the referee pointed to the spot! Oakley James sent Rogerson the wrong way to equalise.

Saracens had their tails up and Rogerson, who had been a virtual spectator for most of the game, had to be alert to deny a low Coby Handley drive.

Droitwich then benefitted from numerous corners but couldn't capitalise, and once again Need was on hand, to produce a fine one handed save to tip Hurdman's effort over the bar.

Jay Sauntson then found himself in a great position, but he thundered an effort off the crossbar with Need beaten, and it wasn't to be Droitwich's day.

Spa host UHL Premier Division side Westfields on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm) in the Marsh Challenge Cup 3rd Round, at Kingy's, before facing bottom of the table Southam United on Saturday (ko 3pm).
