Droitwich Spa 5-2 Newent Town

DSFC Admin22 Dec 2024 - 12:11

Spa back to winning ways

After two straight defeats in the League & Isuzu FA Vase respectively, Droitwich Spa bounced back with a 5-2 win over relegation threatened Newent Town at Kingy's on Saturday.

Now managed by former professional footballer Romayne Thomas, it was Town who started the game the brighter of the two sides and had the first attempt of the game as Kyle Taylor, the "Daffs's" longest serving player, hit an effort from the edge of the area that went millimetres wide of home debutant Joe Stockton's bottom corner.
The visitors continued in a positive fashion and enjoyed some good possession in the Droitwich half without threatening the home goal, but on 10 minutes it was Spa who thought that they had broken the deadlock as James Lemon prodded home from close range but the linesman's flag denied him.

The Saltmen then took hold of the game and the chances started to flow as just one minute late Town keeper Fenner was tested by Perry Moss, then Lemon, before producing a brilliant save from point blank range to deny Charlie Tilley a certain goal.
Nathan Binner's effort from 20 yards then hit the post and went wide on 15 minutes, but the Spa midfielder did eventually open the scoring as a similar effort from the edge of the box bounced in front of Fenner and into the far corner.

Binner was in fine form and Fenner was at his best to push another powerful strike around the post. From the resulting corner Cory Rudd's header flew just over the cross-bar.

On 38 minutes Fenner was again on hand to save well from Tilley, but the rebound fell into the path of James Lemon who had the simple task of tapping home from a couple of yards out.
The Saltmen then put the game out of sight in the minutes remaining before the break as a wonder strike from 30-yards courtesy of Binner rocketed into the net giving the 'keeper no chance, before he turned provider for Perry Moss to stab in unmarked at the back post after a low cross and Droitwich, who dominated the majority of the first half, went into the break 4-0 ahead.

Newent started the second half well with more good possession, but the final ball was lacking.
Spa created the chances and Binner almost netted a hat-trick, again denied by Fenner.
It was soon 5-0 however as good work from Matt Fusco, deployed as right back, and Tilley provided Dugmore the chance to take a touch and finish well into the bottom corner on 59 minutes to keep up his goal per game record.

Andy Crowther made numerous changes for the remaining 30 minutes, and in the driving rain Droitwich took their foot off the gas allowing the visitors to push higher up the pitch.
Riley Stokes fired a warning from distance but his shot went well over the bar before the goal of the game from Yeshaya Lomotey, who picked the ball up midway in the Droitwich half and hit a fine strike that caught Stockton out, reducing the arrears to 5-1 on 73 minutes.
Ten minutes later and Kyle Taylor got another goal back with a great turn and low drive that nestled inside the near post, and it could have been 5-3 as substitute George Callinan flashed a low drive across goal.

An impressive first half showing was countered by a below par second half from Spa, but they did have the last chance of the contest as Joe Hurdman cut inside to test Fenner, but the Town 'keeper was equal to the effort, and Spa held on comfortably to claim all three points.
Due to results elsewhere Spa extended their lead at the top of the table to 6 points, with games in hand.

The Saltmen travel to an improving Bewdley Town on Boxing Day (ko 1pm) at Ribbesford Meadow in a Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 Worcestershire derby.
