Saltmen drop first points of campaign

Droitwich Spa had to settle for a point from their visit to 2nd placed Abingdon United at Northcourt Road on Saturday.

The Saltmen were the better side throughout the first half, and on just 4 minutes Charlie Tilley forced home 'keeper Eddie Cavanagh into a smart save low down to turn around the post.
From the resulting corner Jack Brighton, deployed on the wing, headed just wide.

Spa continued to push forward, however with no fewer than 5 enforced changes across the midfield and up-front, that final ball was lacking.

However on 15 minutes Lucas Edmonds took matters into his own hands as he picked the ball up just inside the United half, taking on three players on his way to the penalty area where he finished brilliantly passed Cavanagh to give Spa the lead.

Tilley was then denied by Cavanagh before the game was turned on its head when Nathan Binner was shown a straight red card as he slid in to a challenge that the referee deemed to be dangerous, much to the disapproval of the 50 or so Droitwich supporters that had made the journey to Oxfordshire.

Despite the numerical advantage, the hosts forced two corners but were unable to trouble Rogerson before the break. In fact it was Spa who came closest to doubling their advantage when Cavanagh denied Brighton.

The second period belonged to Abingdon as Droitwich expectedly sat back and absorbed the pressure, looking to hit on the counter attack which nearly paid dividends early on as new signing Kyonn Evans, who hadn't played since the end of last season, teed up Edmonds for a powerful effort from 30-yards that Cavanagh tipped over the bar in the opening minutes.

Inevitably United started to create opportunities, the first of which was a header that went wide of the target, then Josh Jones's cross-shot rattled the cross-bar.
Rogerson was forced into a first meaningful save on 65 minutes when he saved well from Casey Highmoor's powerful strike.

A well organised Spa backline defended valiantly, and the next threat came from a Joe Green header from a corner that went wide on 78 minutes.

Two minutes later the hosts were reduced to 10-men as Kyonn Evans looked to get away from marker and Yellows Captain Harvey Sandford in a promising position, and the referee gave a second yellow card.
Charlie Tilley's effort from range then just missed the target, however deep into injury time, an Abingdon cross was saved low down by Rogerson that most people in the ground saw the Spa keeper had two hands on the ball, however Green looked to have kick the ball from his grasp and into goal from 2 yards out.
The referee consulted with his linesman and the goal was given to the wild celebrations of the hosts and despair and protests from the visitors.

There was no time for either side to create another chance and the points were shared.

Abingdon slipped to 3rd in the table yet have a game in hand, however due to elimination in the Isuzu FA Vase will not play a competitive game on Saturday.
Redditch Borough moved into 2nd spot after a 1-3 win at Cheltenham Saracens and are 5 points behind Droitwich.

The Saltmen are in Isuzu FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round action on Saturday with a trip to near neighbours Bewdley Town (ko 3pm).
