Back to back wins for Saltmen

Droitwich Spa completed a successful Easter week-end with back to back wins as on Monday, in front of a crowd of 222, they got the better of in-form Shawbury United, who suffered their 2nd defeat in 9 games and effectively ended their hopes of reaching the play-offs.

Droitwich started the game well, and within 3 minutes the referee had pointed to the penalty spot as Charlie Tilley was brought down in the area and Connor Collins continued his fine goal-scoring form converting the penalty kick.

It was a tight opening to the game and the next opportunity for either side fell to the visitors when Jack Howse's free kick tested Olly Sayer in the Spa goal and the ball was hacked to safety.
Droitwich responded as Collins ran clear down the right and as the ball was worked to Tilley, his effort from the edge of the box was deflected wide. From the resulting set piece Luke Molloy's overhead kick from close range was well held by visiting 'keeper Max Williams.

Shawbury then spurned a great opportunity as former Droitwich player Reece Jacobs beat the offside trap but put his effort wide of the goal, and just 5 minutes later they were ruing that miss as hustling from Tilley and Lemon to win possession on the half way line provided a through ball which Ben Jones should have dealt with, but Perry Moss nicked the ball from under him, rounded Williams and tapped into an empty net on 34 minutes for 2-0.

Droitwich had their tails up and there were further chances for Tilley and Collins, but Williams produced a fine save to tip the latter's effort around the post.

However it was 3-0 before the half time whistle when Jeff Agyeman mis-controlled an attempted clearance, Luke Molloy took full advantage as he raced clear and squared for the onrushing Collins to complete a simple tap-in from yards out.

United claimed a goal back from the kick-off when Howse fired a powerful low drive from distance into Sayer's far corner to send the two sides into the dressing room with the score at 3-1.

With the late first half goal, it could have been a much more nervy 2nd half, but James Lemon raced onto a through ball and got there just ahead of Max Williams; the Shawbury 'keeper bring Spa's captain down in the area for a 2nd penalty of the afternoon which Collins again made no mistake from and completed his hat-trick; his third hat-trick of the season and 26th goal in 30 appearances in all competitions.

On the hour mark Shawbury registered the goal of the game when Eric Mensah dribbled his way into a shooting position 25-yards out and fired a thunderbolt in off the post, giving Sayer no chance for 4-2.

The visitors enjoyed plenty of possession, but a mature performance from the Saltmen saw the only chance of note fall to Captain Emmanuel Williams, who hit the post with a powerful header, whilst Spa's only opportunity fell to Tilley, who forced Williams into a good save.

Droitwich's marathon end of season sprint is back on track, and with games in hand, superior goal difference and just one point behind placed Ingles, Droitwich can go 2nd with a point from Thursday evening's home game against 5th placed Allscott Heath (ko 7.45pm).

The Shropshire side have seen their last two games abandoned and have been deducted 3 points over the last few days.
