Saltmen scrap to three valuable points

The Saltmen made it five straight wins in all competitions with a hard-fought 1-2 victory at 3rd-placed OJM Black Country on Tuesday evening.

The hosts started the brighter, and controlled large parts of the game as Spa, without several first team regulars, looked content to sit back and hit on the counter; a tactic which paid dividends after 90 minutes.

The sheer pace from OJM, particularly down the right hand side and Reece Morris, caused plenty of problems for a make-shift Spa defence, however the finishing of Morris, Reece Jacobs and Adam Garmson allowed the scores to remain at 0-0 until with a quarter of an hour on the clock, Spa took the lead.

Perry Moss was clipped 25-yards from goal, and Luke Molloy scored his 2nd goal in 3 games from a set-piece, that beat Connor Hopkins courtesy of a deflection.

Within 5 minutes the hosts evened up the scores, as the Spa defence were caught flat-footed and allowed Morris to beat the otherwise well-practiced offside trap. He square for Jacobs who had the simple task of tapping home from close range.

It was an entertaining and end to end first period, and Droitwich had further opportunities through Perry Moss, Ollie Thompson, James Lemon and Alex Dugmore.

The second half was a more cagey affair, with the hosts having the lions share of possession, however Droitwich had the first chance as Lemon raced on to a long ball but his chip from distance went narrowly over the bar.

OJM then had two huge chances to take the lead, the first and biggest opportunity, fell to right back Bradley Maslin-Jones, who burst in to the box, but fired well over the bar when well positioned.
Then Reece Jacobs looked to be through with only Rogerson to beat, but a heroic last ditch tackle from Dugmore snuffed out the threat.

Droitwich defended valiantly and were rewarded for their efforts when a set piece from the right was flicked on by substitute Connor Collins, and Sam Hurdman, just introduced, fired a powerful low first time drive into the bottom corner from 10-yards out.
For the second time in three days, substitutions from Droitwich's management team allowed the Saltmen to take the lead.

There was one more decent opportunity for Jacobs but he could only find the side netting, whilst Dom Rogerson was in good form to further deny the hosts.

A backs-against-the-wall, gritty Droitwich performance sealed all three points, and temporarily lifts Andy Crowther's men in to the play-off places.

Spa have another mission just as challenging on Saturday (ko 3pm) with a first ever trip to Burton-on-Trent to face in-form 7th placed Stapenhill, who still have an outside chance of making the play-offs.
