The Saltmen and Wednesfield shared the spoils in an 8-goal thriller at Kingy’s on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the score-line, the game was a scrappy affair, with almost every shot on target hitting the back of the net!
The visitors took the lead with just 3-minutes on the clock, as a defensive mix-up between Rogerson and Braiden-Smith allowed Jack Dew in to finish well.
Droitwich, unused to being in this situation so early in the contest looked rushed, but toiled away as Collins and Lemon both came close before Haydn Morris was on hand to level up the scores on 12 minutes with a close-range tap in from Collins’ cross, as visiting ‘keeper Dom Smith went to ground early.
Spa struggled to get control of the ball with some sloppy passing and un-assured defending, and the guests took the lead midway through the half as Rogerson’s weak clearance fell to Rhys Horton, who, from a good 30-yards out found the target leaving a stranded Rogerson with no chance.
It got worse still for Spa as more sloppy defending allowed an un-marked Horton to head in at the back post after a long throw-in by Ashley Southall was flicked on in to his path.
Droitwich pulled one back on 42 minutes as Collins struck a fine drive from the edge of the area in to Smith’s bottom corner.
Wednesfield started the second half the better of the two sides, and Horton completed his hat-trick on 53 minutes when the hosts failed to deal with a corner and he smashed home from close range.
Connor Collins' attempted chip went just the wrong side of the post, and both Cory Rudd and Jack Davies fired wide from distance as Spa turned the screw against a resolute Wednesfield.
Haydn Morris scored his 2nd of the afternoon to pull a goal back with an excellent run and finish past Smith, and Collins was then denied a certain equaliser when his close range effort was spectacularly cleared off the line.
The hosts weren’t to be denied however, and Cory Rudd scored his first goal of the season; true to form a powerful low drive from distance which rifled in to the bottom corner to equalise.
Arguably Wednesfield’s best player on the day, winning everything in the air and with a long throw that assisted the visitors’ 3rd goal, Ashley Southall was given his marching orders for an elbow on Connor Collins several minutes from time, however the Saltmen for the second time in a week couldn’t capitalise on their numerical advantage, and the contest ended in a 4-4 result which was probably about right on the day.
Spa looked far from their best and Wednesfield worked hard to make it difficult for the Saltmen, who drop out of the play-off places due to results elsewhere.
With just 7 games remaining, Droitwich have the chance to jump back in to the top 6 on Tuesday night when relegation threatened AFC Bridgnorth visit Kingy's (ko 7.45pm).
