Droitwich Spa 2-0 Hinckley AFC

DSFC Admin4 Feb 2023 - 20:36

Super Spa claim all 3 points

The Saltmen capped off an excellent week with a memorable victory, and performance to boot, with a 2-0 home victory over 3rd placed Hinckley AFC.

It was the Leicestershire sides' first defeat away from Kirkby Road since October, and only the 3rd time that they had failed to score away from home all season. Last time out, Hinckley won 8-1 over Wolverhampton Sporting.

Spa came flying out of the blocks in the opening quarter of an hour, and with just 3 minutes on the clock Connor Collins raced clear with only Hinckley 'keeper Brandon Bache to beat. The Spa striker was fouled in the box and Droitwich awarded a penalty.
After a spot kick masterclass in mid-week which earned Spa a place in the Worcestershire Senior Cup Semi Final, Collins' weak penalty just off-centre allowed Bache to make a comfortable save.

Both Moss and Collins had half chances, before Hinckley enjoyed their best spell of the game, without calling Rogerson in the home goal in to any serious action.
The visitors were no doubt missing top scorer Chandler Pegg, however they almost took the lead when from a corner kick Jack Beaseley's top corner bound header was cleared off the line by Luke Molloy.

Droitwich didn't squander a second opportunity to break the deadlock however, as on 24 minutes Alex Dugmore's close range header from Molloy's precision free kick gave Bache no chance, for his 9th League goal of the season.

The rest of the half was played out mostly devoid of any real chances, as the two sides cancelled each other out in a midfield battle, however Lewis Collins may feel he should have done better after good work from the lively Isa Abrahamu.

Spa started the second half in the same vein as the first, but were alot more penetrating with their attacks.

Bache had to be alert to deny Perry Moss and Jack Brighton, whilst both Dugmore and Collins headed over the bar from decent positions.

Hinckley seldom posed a threat throughout the second period, as both Wheale and Abrahamu were replaced at half time, however it was Collins again who fired wildly over from the edge of the area.

Droitwich did make it 2-0 when James Lemon sprung the offside trap and finished superbly in of the post when one-on-one with Bache.

Connor Collins then rattled the crossbar with a header as Spa continued to play some neat passing football.

A special mention has to go to the Droitwich defence, who were superb all afternoon; Alex Dugmore and Matty Hunt repelling any aerial threats that came their way, whilst stand-in left back Haydn Morris didn't look out of place and the marauding Jack Brighton as dependable as ever at right back, helped the Saltmen on to a fully deserved three points.

This result means that 5 points now separate Hinckley (3rd) and Spa (6th), and the Saltmen have two games in hand over today's visitors.

On Tuesday evening Droitwich are back in action once again with a trip to Wolverhampton Sporting (ko 7.45pm).
With a win on the road, Andy Crowther's men will climb 2 places in the table (4th) and in to the play-off's.
