Saltmen earn first draw of the season in 6-goal thriller

Droitwich Spa and Smethwick Rangers produced a highly entertaining game at Kingys on Saturday afternoon in front of another strong crowd of 241.

The game couldn't have started any better for the Saltmen when right-back Alex Dugmore cut his way through the Rangers defence to finish well and give Droitwich a 1-0 lead inside the opening 3 minutes.

The visitors looked strong and well organised going forward, creating several half chances after conceding an early goal.

Spa's lead looked further in danger as they were made to make two substitutions within the opening 20-minutes - both Perry Moss and Jake Whitehouse picked up injuries and were replaced by Haydn Morris and Tom Smith respectively.

Matt Oliver pulled off a good save tipping an effort over the cross-bar, but the equaliser finally came when Rangers' top scorer Adam Nazir dribbled his way across the Spa penalty area before unleashing a powerful strike on the turn in to the bottom corner.

Droitwich replied when Connor Collins came close, followed by Scott Braiden-Smith's header from a set piece, but it was Smethwick who took the lead when some hesitant defending allowed the ball to bounce around the area, and Nazir was there to neatly head over Oliver and under the cross-bar from close range.

Ben Cowlishaw then had a chipped cross-shot cleared from under the bar having the visiting 'keeper beaten, and Luke Molloy fired just wide.

Rangers could have gone further infront when they beat the offside trap, but Matt Oliver made a smart save to deny the striker.

Droitwich did draw level however when Alex Dugmore scored his second of the game, and 4th in his last two appearances when he met Mollloy's cross with a clinical header 5-minutes before the break.

Unfortunately, parity didn't last long, as a determined run in to Droitwich's area down the left hand-side saw Tom Smith fell his opponent and the referee duly pointed to the spot.
Nazir sent Oliver the wrong way from the resulting spot kick for his hat-trick, and 12th of the season in just 14 games.

Spa came out with the bit between their teeth in the second half, dominating possession and creating several excellent opportunities.

Molloy, Collins and Dugmore all had efforts that went close, and Collins's over-head kick was well saved by the visiting 'keeper.

Another defender pulled Spa level for the 2nd time as Scott Braiden-Smith was on hand with a back post header with 15-minutes remaining.

Droitwich had three strikers on the pitch for the remainder of the game; Keatley Charles came close before James Lemon had an effort blocked with the 'keeper beaten, and Spa thought that they had won it when the ball looked to everyone like it had crossed the line, but the referee didn't agree, nor did he consult his assistant.

For Smethwick's part, they got in to some good positions throughout the second half, playing on the counter, but never really troubled Matt Oliver thanks to some heroic last ditch defending and wayward finishing.

Deep in to injury time, a Rangers attack broke down, and Spa, with a 3 on two advantage broke clear; Connor Collins squared for James Lemon in the penalty area who had a simple tap in to win the game, but the Droitwich Captain got it all wrong and scooped his effort over the bar from just yards out in front of an empty net. The referee then blew for full time meaning the two sides had to settle for a share of the points , in an entertaining game.

Droitwich cling on to a playoff place (5th) after this result, however with no game next week-end, that could all change.

Spa are next in action on Saturday 15th October (ko 3pm) with a trip to Coventry Copsewood.
