Droitwich Spa fell to a 3rd consecutive defeat at home to League leaders Dudley Town, whose efficient performance ultimately secured them all three points.
The Robins started on the front foot, and got in to some good positions that they couldn't capitalise on. Connor Archer firing into the arms of Matt Oliver from a tight angle on the right-hand side early on.
The Saltmen grew in to the game, and James Lemon may feel he should have done better when well positioned, but he didn't make clean contact with a bouncing ball.
More chances followed, and Connor Collins was millimetres away from giving Spa the lead as his looping goal-bound effort was cleared off the line by Ashley Smith. Spa's top scorer then hit a shot narrowly wide, and then another header was spectacularly deflected over the bar by Joe Colley.
Former Droitwich striker Lucas Edmonds spurned two great chances to put Dudley in front - his first was well saved by the feet of Matt Oliver, and his second, with just the Spa stopper to beat, was dragged wide.
Matt Tyler made his second appearance after a lengthy injury, however pulled up on 20-minutes with a hamstring problem. His replacement Luke Molloy 's top-corner bound free-kick was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Town stopper Ethan Hawkes. A string of corners for Droitwich followed, which ultimately weren't capitalised on, to finish a thoroughly entertaining half between two evenly matched teams.
The second period saw significantly fewer chances, but the quality of the play from both sides was noteworthy. James Lemon had an early chance for Droitwich, whilst at the other end Matt Oliver's goal wasn't troubled by efforts from Owen Massey and Connor Archer, which were both wayward.
Luke Molloy, Connor Collins and James Lemon all had further half chances to give the hosts the lead, but with 5-minutes remaining, good work down the right from Sam Chukwurah produced a lay off for Dan Danks to give Dudley a late winner.
Droitwich still had a couple of set pieces that came to nothing as the visitors defended stoutly, and the final chance fell to substitute Ben Cowlishaw, who just missed out on a loose ball in the Dudley box.
An excellent performance from Droitwich against the league leaders, and a game that Spa can feel hard done by to not have secured at least a point.
On Tuesday evening (ko 7.45pm) Spa are looking to get back on track at Kingys, when we host Shawbury United in the MFL Division 1.
