Saltmen off to flying start

The Saltmen got off to a flying start in their first ever game at Step 6, with a 3-0 away win at Chelmsley Town, and an excellent team performance to boot.
Andy Crowther started with 10 of 11 players who finished last season, with Matt Tyler making his debut alongside Jack Davies in midfield.

Spa started the stronger and controlled the majority of the first half.
Most of the threat came from down the right hand side, however half-chances that fell to James Lemon, Connor Collins, Luke Molloy, Jack Davies and finally Alex Dugmore's header were all off target.

Chelmsley also had a few long-range efforts, all off target, and several through-balls caused Spa's defence some problems, but Matt Oliver was untroubled.

Spa were awarded a penalty 10 minutes before the break when Connor Collins was pushed from behind, and despite Town's protests, the referee pointed to the spot.
Collins stepped up coolly to take the penalty, and made no mistake, sending 'keeper Harry Sulley the wrong way to score Droitwich's first ever goal at Step 6.

Droitwich continued to attack until the half time whistle, and their efforts were duly rewarded when James Lemon curled in a fantastic curling effort from the edge of the are,a which found the top corner, sending the sizeable away contingent in to raptures.

Town started the 2nd half the more promising, but again the quality of the final ball was lacking. Once again any shots directed towards the Spa goal were off-target.

Droitwich soon got back in to their rhythm, and could have gone further ahead when Lemon's low drilled cross just evaded the on-rushing Connor Collins.

The returning Ollie Thompson and Ben Cowlishaw were introduced for their debuts midway through the half, and both got straight in to the action, with the former forcing a fine save from Sulley, and the latter having two excellent chances to extend the Saltmen's lead, but the home stopper was equal to both efforts.

Droitwich did get their 3rd goal, and another fine finish it was, this time from Alex Dugmore, who rose highest at the back post to meet Phillips's deep free-kick; his header looping over Sulley and in to the far corner.

A fantastic team performance from every Droitwich player, and a well earned victory. Next up for Andy Crowther's men is a long away trip to Leicestershire next Saturday (ko 3pm) to face Ingles.

After the first round of games, the two promoted sides (Coton Green and Droitwich) find themselves in the top two spots.
