Saltmen crash out of Vase

Droitwich Spa crashed out of the Isuzu FA Vase at the first hurdle after a resounding 4-7 defeat at home to Bilston Town.

Whilst Spa were missing James Lemon and Perry Moss due to unavailability as well as another 3 players side-lined through longer term injuries, the Steelmen went in to the game visibly more hungry than the Saltmen, who will want to put this heavy defeat - the heaviest of Andy Crowthers' 3-year tenure to the back of their minds quickly.

It was an even opening, and Spa came closest to opening the scoring when Josh Hurdman fired over from the edge of the area as Bilston failed to clear their lines, however the electric Eesa Sawyers had a big hand in giving the visitors the lead just 3 minutes later as he skipped his way through the home defence far too easily to give Ethan Pearce a simple tap in.
More determined work from Sawyers almost doubled the Black Country sides' advantage 10 minutes later but the wingers' finish was off-target.

Droitwich then gifted Bilston their second as a short back-pass sold Chadwick short, and the Droitwich stopper committed a foul in the area. Jake Short made no mistake from the resulting spot kick - the first of four over the afternoon!

Josh Hurdman then hobbled off the pitch after his off-balance effort hit the side-netting, but soon after a towering Alex Dugmore header brought Spa back in to the contest.
The two sides then traded blows for the remaining 10 minutes of the half, as Joel Chadwick produced a fantastic point-blank save to deny Short, then at the other end Jack Brightons' cross-shot hit the cross bar, Roland Krol forced a save from Kai Lloyd and Charlie Tilley saw his effort go wide.

Just 10-minutes after the re-start Max Loveridge lost possession in his own half and with Spa out of shape, substitute Soms Sibanda was set through on goal and he finished well for 1-3.
With Droitwich in disarray, Sawyers twisted and turned his way in to the box before firing a sublime effort in off the base of the far post to give Bilston and almost unassailable 1-4 lead with 30 minutes to play.

The Saltmen got a lifeline when Charlie Tilley was fouled in the box, and Connor Collins converted the spot kick, and soon after the Spa talisman came close after good work and a deep cross from Krol, but Bilston restored their 3-goal lead when another substitute Josh Simcox scored a fine free-kick with 10 minutes to play... 2-5!

Droitwich got one back again when Tilley tapped in the rebound after stand-in striker ALex Dugmore's effort was saved by Lloyd, and then Krol came close again but he fired wide when well positioned.

On 90-minutes, Jack Brighton was penalised for hand-ball in the box that Simcox scored, and Spa then got their 2nd penalty of the afternoon deeper in to injury time which Molloy converted.

There was still time for another goal of this crazy game, when another Bilston sub Les Wood cut through the Droitwich defence way too easily to round off the scoring and send the Steelmen in to the next round, where they will face Ashby Ivanhoe at the NFU Stadium.
