Droitwich Spa FC continue to impress against higher level opposition, and Tuesday night was no exception, as the Saltmen comfortably defeated a full-strength Worcester City side at Kingys, in front of just shy of 1000 spectators.
It was a big occasion for the club, with much local interest, two local newspaper and radio station were also present to witness this first ever local derby, and Droitwich didn't disappoint.
The opening stages were even, with no real clear cut opportunities; City looking good on the ball going forward, however lacked ideas in the final third.
Captain Aaron Roberts had the first opportunity but Matt Oliver comfortably saved his header, and Spa had a few set pieces to deal with, which were comfortably defended.
Bailey Fuller then had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring as he rounded Oliver, but struck his effort wide from a narrow angle.
Droitwich started to grow in confidence, as Captain, and former City record holder James Lemon fired a shot from distance wide, and Luke Molloy's free kick in a dangerous position ultimately came to nothing.
However, on 25 minutes, from a Spa set-piece, the referee spotted a push on Alex Dugmore in the City area and duly pointed to the spot.
Connor Collins confidently stepped up to open the scoring and give Droitwich a 1-0 lead.
Worcester looked rocked, and Spa could have extended their lead when Jack Davies's head went narrowly wide of Harrison's goal.
The Saltmen didn't have to wait long for their 2nd of the night, as a pinpoint corner was met by a trademark Alex Dugmore bullet-header to send the majority of Kingy's in to raptures on 36 minutes.
And just 7 minutes late, a fantastic solo effort from Perry Moss, who jinked his way passed three City defender's before slotting in to Harrison's far corner off the foot of the post put Droitwich on cloud 9 with a 3-goal lead in to the break.
Spa started where they left off in the second period as Collins pulled a decent save out of Harrison early on.
Most people were expecting a City onslaught, but it never really came as Droitwich defended well, Matt Oliver was drawn in to action to deny Parker and Fuller, aside from any routine stops.
Most of the clearer cut chances were at the other end, where Harrison pulled off some more excellent stops to deny Collins, Dugmore and Moss as Spa looked content to see the game out and hit on the counter.
The night got worse for Worcester when Cameron Ebbutt was sin-binned for dissent, and soon after, the final whistle blew to see Droitwich through to the next round and end a memorable night.
Whilst a lot of the talk was about Worcester, who after the game relieved Graham Deakin of his duties as Manager, it has to be said that Spa were good value for their win, kept a rare clean sheet as Andy Crowther's men defended exemplary and took their chances, and the score-line could have be more.
The Saltmen's attention will now focus back to MFL Division 1 matters, as on Saturday Spa make a tough looking trip up to a rejuvenated Heath Hayes (ko 3pm).
