Gornal Colts 1-3 Droitwich Spa

The Saltmen put in a tired but effective display at Gornal Colts to reach the Final of the League Cup.

The home side were on top for much of the first half, but Droitwich's offside trap worked well on numerous occasions early on.

Spa 'keeper Ryan Williams had to be alert on several occasions rushing out of goal to intercept the attacking threat.

Droitwich were able to create a few half chances, which generally came with defense-splitting passes over the top, which the home side just about dealt with, thanks to headers back to 'keeper, however in the 22nd minute, the same routine caught out the home defense, and the header back this time was mis-placed, and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Droitwich raised their game after the goal, and Connor Collins, James Lemon and Haydn Morris all had efforts on goal, before Captain James Lemon was put through one-on-one when he calmly rounded the home 'keeper and slot home to give Spa a 2-0 advantage going in to the break.
It could have been so much different if Colts's finishing was as good, as the hosts spurned a hand-full of chances before half time, the closest being a low drive across the area which went just wide of Williams's post.

Droitwich were the better side for large parts of the second period without creating too many clear cut opportunities.

However the hosts got back in to the game when Leon Salmon finished well from close range to set up a tense final 20 minutes.

Droitwich held their nerve however and restored a 2-goal advantage when Connor Collins rose highest to score with a bullet-header from 8-yards out to settle the tie.

The Saltmen are through to the League Cup Final for the first time, where we will meet Bromyard Town next Saturday (21st May) ko 3pm, at Billbrook FC. More details to follow.
