Droitwich Spa progressed to the League Cup Semi Final after a slender victory over Wyrley United, played at Malvern Town's HD Anywhere Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The only goal of the game was scored from the penalty spot by Connor Collins, however both sides had a host of chances to change the score-line.
The Saltmen dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout. Some whipped in low crosses from either flank in the first half narrowly evaded the Spa strikers, whilst Alex Dugmore and Scott Smith both came close with headed opportunities from corner kicks.
Wyrley defended stoutly and threw themselves in the way of everything Droitwich had to throw at them, and they spurned possibly the best chances of the first period on the counter attack, but the finishing was off target, Luke Harrison being the main culprit.
Droitwich were awarded a spot kick on the stroke of half time as Cory Rudd's powerful effort was adjudged to have been handled by a United player, and the referee pointed to the spot. Connor Collins' low penalty went under the visiting 'keeper Adam Jenkins' dive and in to the bottom corner.
Droitwich again controlled possession in the second period and calved out some much more clear-cut chances.
Wyrley's desperate defending, along with some superb saves from Jenkins, kept the score at 1-0, as Luke Molloy, Haydn Morris and James Lemon all had some excellent close-range chances spurned.
The visitors always looked a threat on the counter attack, and the game was set-up for a last minute equaliser, however Spa held firm. United's best chance coming from Louie Mason, which a relatively untroubled Matt Oliver was equal to.
With no game on Saturday, Droitwich will be back in League action, and back at Malvern, next Tuesday evening (ko 7.45pm) for the visit of Bromyard Town.
