Saltmen bow out of Vase

Droitwich Spa's valiant efforts in the Buildbase FA Vase had taken the club to the 2nd round proper, however they didn't have enough to get past MFL Premier Division side Lye Town on Saturday.

In dreadful conditions, the game was far from a footballing spectacle as both teams slogged away without any fluidity and Spa came nowhere near to the performance levels of the heroics which they had produced in earlier rounds.

The Flyers made the best possible start to the game as Alex Dugmore slipped on the boggy surface, Emils Fedotovs latched onto the hopeful punt forward and confidently rolled the ball passed Matt Oliver after just 4 minutes.

Spa struggled to create any meaningful chances, but Connor Collins forced a save from Charlie Price mid-way through the half and James Lemon also fired wide before the visitors had a big penalty appeal for handball waved away by the match official much to the dismay of the 120 or so travelling fans.

Lye had the better opportunities through Jordan Davies and Joe Colley however Oliver wasn't stretched to deny them.

The second half followed a similar pattern, and with the conditions worsening the football wasn't getting any more attractive.

The hosts with more ideas going forward with Spa hitting on the counter-attack but without creating many clear cut chances.

It was getting to the stage where it was all or nothing for Droitwich, and right on time James Lemon beat the offside trap and fired off a shot which was initially repelled by Price, but Lemon was first to the rebound to equalise for Spa with 10 minutes remaining to spark wild celebrations from the visiting fans.

Lye stepped up a gear and turned the screw in the closing stages - desperate defending ensued and Oliver was called upon twice to deny the hosts, who also fired narrowly wide of the target.

It was 4 minutes into injury time when the Flyers won the game as Sam Tye was given way too much space to drive forward and pick his shot with a low drive to send Lye into the 3rd Round and end Droitwich's excellent Vase run.
