Saltmen through after Vase upset

The Saltmen produced an excellent performance to secure a Buildbase FA Vase upset at The Cottage Ground on Saturday.

Wednesfield (of the WMRL Premier Division) never really got going and found it difficult to cope with the pace of the visitors who had the lions share of possession in the first half particularly.

Several chances came and went for the Saltmen over the opening half hour as James Lemon, Connor Collins, Jack Davies, Matty Hunt and Ben Tilbury were either thwarted by home stopper Pain or missed the target, whilst the hosts showed little danger going forward.

Droitwich took a deserved lead on 35minutes as Morris's deep cross was headed back across goal by Alex Dugmore and Connor Collins was on hand to head home from close range.

Wednesfield almost levelled before the break as Will Osbourne's effort beat Coombes in the Spa goal but was scrambled off the line by Alex Dugmore before Rudd cleared the danger.

The second half was a more even affair as the Cottagers made a doible substitution at the break, but neither side created any serious chances in the opening 20minutes of the half.

Wednesfield were forced into a 3rd substitution when Jake Griffiths hobbled off with a thigh strain, and Spa turned the screw in a bid to seal the game.

Davies, Lemon and Collins were all close to adding to the lead, but another ex-Fairfield player in the form of left-back Lewis Phillips was the one who put Spa through.
He picked up the ball on the halfway line and took on several Wednesfield players before unleashing a powerful drive from the edge of the area to put Spa which effectively sealed the win.

Reece Jacobs was then introduced for his debut and he came close to extending the lead, whilst James Lemon was denied what looked like a stone-wall penalty.

The Cottagers started to loose their discipline as Manager John Griffiths was sent off whilst another of his charges was sent to the "sin bin" for the last 8 minutes.

Droitwich celebrated an excellent win which sees them through to the 2nd Qualifying round in a fortnight's time with a very big ask away at MFL Premier side Tividale.
