Saltmen lift Presidents Cup for first time in their history

An intense, passionate and hard working display from the Worcestershire outfit saw them clinch a surprise victory against the almost invincible Alvis Sporting at New Mill Lane. The result saw Droitwich Spa lift the Presidents Cup for the first time in their 31 year history - their most prestigious win thus far. They also had to deal with unavailability of several players due to suspensions and work commitments and could only name 2 substitutes.

Droitwich started the game the brighter of the two sides without really forcing Hooker in the Alvis goal into a serious save. Mike Seeley came closest early on when his header went narrowly over from a corner before Lemon drew a decent save from Hooker with a fierce strike. Seabourne, Lemon and Morris all got in behind the defence on a number of occasions only to be denied by excellent last ditch defending. The latter drilled a decent effort from 20 yards wide of goal late on.

Leading scorer Dildale Linton lead the line for the Tankmen after returning from injury and his lightning pace was a threat. Thomas Maguire had a quiet game generally, but caused Seikora some problems in the first half - a number of a low crosses were well dealt with by the rear guard of Seeley, Burrows and Oliver in the Spa goal.

Alvis came into the game after some presumed strong words at half time, and forced a succesion of corners which were well dealt with by Droitwich. Shane Brassington came close to opening the scoring within 10 minutes of the restart but his powerful shot went wide of the goal.

Droitwich then seemed to calm down and enjoyed more possesion dealing with Alvis' long ball tactics relatively comfortably.

The deadlock was broken on 72 minutes when the impressive Graeme Pardoe was fouled 25 yards out, Brighton stepped up and hit his free kick goalwards. Hooker made a hash of the save - unable to keep the ball out and the Saltmen reeled away in celebration to the delight of the numerous Droitwich supporters present.

Alvis then threw on all their subs in a bid to get back into the game - again forcing a string of corners. There were a few heart-in-mouth moments - not least when Seeley's mis-kick let Brassington in in a promising poisition but his drive took a defelction and went wide of goal.

Droitwich still carried a threat with Seabourne causing all sorts of problems up front and Brighton with his pin-point deliveries from set pieces. They could have gone 2-0 up minutes from time as Seeley ran almost the length of the pitch with 2 men in support - he opted for Lemon who had crept offside instead of the superb Andy Crowther to his right and the chance had gone.

Alvis then lost their heads and suffered 2 sendings off in a matter of minutes - both second bookings - as the time was ticking down.

The final whistle was met with jubilation by players, managers and the sizeable Droitwich contingent who had made the long journey up the M42 to cap a memorable victory in a superb season.
