Spa gaffer looks back on the opening day defeat

Spa Manager Quentin Townsend spoke to dsfc.news about Saturday's opening day defeat at Roman Glass St George.

"I think we have every right to feel a little hard done by.
That said, while the officials’ performance certainly didn’t help us, we also have to look at ourselves.
We created more than enough chances to win the game, particularly in the first half, where we had at least three excellent opportunities to put the match beyond doubt.

Football has a habit of punishing missed chances, and that’s exactly what happened.

Roman Glass enjoyed more possession after the break, but they didn’t create a great deal until we made a mistake that allowed them to score ultimately the goal that won the game.

As I’ve already said, we can’t use the officials as an excuse, although we certainly didn’t get the rub of the green on a number of key decisions.

There can be no complaints about Nathan Binner’s red card.
In my opinion, it was reckless and the correct decision.
Nathan knows that himself, and it’s something he’ll learn from.
His passion and commitment are never in question; it’s just about channelling that emotion in the right way.

Naturally, we were disappointed to make the journey back up the M5 from Bristol empty-handed, especially given the performance.

However, there were plenty of positives to take, and we now turn our full attention to Tuesday night and our first Home game of the season.

I’m confident that if we continue to perform as we did for large spells on Saturday, we’ll be right in the mix when the season reaches its conclusion.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to King’s on Tuesday evening.
As always, thank you for your fantastic support—it really does make a difference.
