Droitwich Spa produced a strong second-half performance to earn a deserved point at Longlevens, with Perry Moss cancelling out Ethan Vaughan’s excellent first-half opener in an entertaining 1–1 draw.

On a still, clear evening and an exceptional playing surface, conditions were almost perfect for football. The Saltmen, wearing gold, arrived looking to build on Saturday’s 2–0 victory over Mangotsfield United, while Longlevens entered the game in good form themselves.

Spa started positively. Moss tested the home goalkeeper with an early free-kick before captain James Lemon was hauled back by Longlevens skipper Ollie Long as he threatened to break towards goal. Long was shown the game’s first yellow card after just seven minutes.

The hosts had a strong penalty appeal waved away four minutes later before the game began to open up. Finlay Gwillim broke clear on 15 minutes and attempted to chip Dom Rogerson, but lifted his effort over the bar, while Lewis Driscoll fired off target moments later.

Spa responded through Archie Thurston, whose 17th-minute effort forced the Longlevens goalkeeper into a save and earned a corner.

The Saltmen were competing particularly well in the middle of the pitch, winning plenty of the 50/50 battles, while Lemon was proving an effective focal point, holding the ball up and bringing Spa’s wide players into the game.

Moss was particularly lively on the left, repeatedly looking to take on his man and deliver into the Longlevens area.

The hosts remained dangerous from set pieces, however, and came within inches of opening the scoring on 28 minutes when an effort following a corner crashed against the crossbar.

Within a minute, Spa were threatening at the opposite end as another dangerous Moss delivery found Thurston, who was unable to convert.

Moss continued to cause problems and another excellent run on 34 minutes ended with his cross being headed back across goal by Bow, but there was nobody in gold arriving to apply the finishing touch.

Three minutes later, Longlevens struck.

Vaughan collected the ball on the left, drove past the Droitwich defence and, after moving into the penalty area, produced a superb curling finish beyond Rogerson and into the top-right corner.

The goal sparked Longlevens’ best spell of the half, with Parsons putting another opportunity narrowly wide two minutes later.

Spa responded before the interval. Thurston’s 42nd-minute shot was spilled by the goalkeeper, but Lemon couldn’t quite reach the loose ball quickly enough to turn home the rebound.

Moss was then on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Rose shortly before the break, although no card followed.

The half-time whistle arrived after 46 minutes with the hosts leading 1–0. It was arguably harsh on the Saltmen after an evenly contested opening period in which both sides had created opportunities, but Longlevens had taken theirs.

Saltmen respond

Spa began the second half with renewed purpose.

Thurston immediately threatened with a run down the left before Vaughan reminded Droitwich of his danger by attacking down the opposite flank.

The first Droitwich change arrived after 55 minutes as George Dalton replaced Sam Hurdman, and Dalton would go on to make a noticeable impact.

Longlevens continued to pose a threat from corners and Wells headed narrowly wide on 59 minutes.

Two minutes later, however, Spa got the equaliser their performance deserved.

A scramble developed inside the Longlevens penalty area and Moss reacted quickest, forcing the ball home to make it 1–1.

It was fitting reward for Moss, who had been at the heart of much of Droitwich’s best attacking play throughout the evening.

The equaliser changed the momentum and Spa began to take control.

Thurston produced another strong run to earn a corner before substitute Dalton raced down the left and delivered an inviting ball across the face of goal which Lemon narrowly failed to convert.

By the 71st minute, the Saltmen were firmly on top, and Moss came close to completing the turnaround when he fired narrowly wide from the right-hand side of the area.

Longlevens responded with one of their best opportunities of the second half. After Carey was booked for a foul, the resulting free-kick forced Rogerson into a save before the follow-up was desperately cleared from the goal line.

Spa continued to look for a winner. Clayton replaced Smith before another Droitwich corner came to nothing, while Dalton continued to provide energy and direct running from the bench.

With seven minutes remaining, Nathan Binner came agonisingly close. His effort looked threatening but struck a Longlevens player almost on the goal line.

Vaughan, who had earlier been booked, tested Rogerson again at the other end with five minutes remaining, although his effort was comfortably gathered. Dalton then tried his luck for Spa, but his shot lacked the power to trouble the home goalkeeper.

Haydn Morris replaced Lemon for the closing stages as Longlevens mounted one final spell of heavy pressure.

The Saltmen defence stood firm, dealing impressively with a succession of late attacks before the referee brought proceedings to an end in the 94th minute.

A point apiece was ultimately a fair reflection of an evenly contested game.

Longlevens had their moments, particularly from set pieces, and Vaughan’s excellent individual goal separated the teams at half-time. But Spa responded impressively after the break and enjoyed the upper hand for significant periods of the second half.

Moss was a constant threat and deserved his equaliser, Thurston caused problems with his direct running, while Dalton provided a real injection of energy after coming from the bench.

The frustration for Droitwich will be that several promising positions in the final third went unconverted. On another night, one of those opportunities might have turned a good away performance into all three points.

Nevertheless, after Saturday’s victory over Mangotsfield, the Saltmen make it four points from two games and leave Longlevens with a thoroughly deserved point.
