Corsham Town 3-0 Droitwich Spa

By Steve Pinder
Spa went into this Hellenic League game in confident mood following their 7-2 win over Stourport. However, the trip to Wiltshire and high flying Corsham Town looked to be a tougher proposition. And so it proved.

Hampered by the absence of Sam Carey, Rohan Levy and Perry Moss, Spa were again unable to field an unchanged line-up.

Undeterred, the Droitwich side started the game positively, enjoying significant spells of possession but unable to create any clear-cut chances. Things may have ended differently if the referee had a better view of a challenge on Alex Dugmore inside the Corsham penalty area. Unfortunately for Spa, the officials’ sight-lines were obstructed and strong Droitwich claims were waved away.

Moments later, a second penalty shout was also declined after a well struck cross from the right side appeared to catch a Corsham hand.
Droitwich continued to press forward but were caught a little short at the back and paid the price as Kye Simpson neatly opened the scoring for the hosts. Eight minutes later, the Corsham man doubled his tally for the day and gave his side a two goal advantage which they took into the halftime break.

At 2-0 down, Spa needed to score first when they emerged for the second half but with barely a minute on the clock they found themselves three down after Thomas Plank extended the Corsham lead.

Faced with a mountain to climb, Archie Thurston and George Dalton were introduced on the hour, followed ten minutes later by Hubert Zatorski and Joe Clayton but despite plenty of effort and determination, Droitwich remained unable to unlock a strong Corsham defence who saw the game out without significant difficulty.

Next up, another trip to Wiltshire as Spa travel Royal Wootton Bassett this Saturday (ko 3pm), before two home games the following week against Cribbs (Tuesday, ko 7.45pm) and Mangotsfield United (Saturday, ko 3pm).
