Derby day delight for Droitwich Spa as they beat 10-man Worcester Raiders 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Spa put themselves a goal up in the first 6 minutes of the game with a well worked goal. Perry Moss passed the ball through to Josh Hurdman who chipped it over Raiders ‘keeper Emery, and his shot trickled into the back of the net. The goal marked Hurdman’s 10th goal of the season and his 50th goal for Droitwich since joining in 2023.
The Saltmen were in control for most of the first half and Raiders struggled to create any decent chances in front of goal.
Near the end of the first half saw a good chance for Droitwich, but Hurdman’s free kick from the right did not curl enough and went just wide of the top right corner.
Right at the start of the second half saw Raiders’ best chance at goal so far but Bailey Fuller put his shot over the bar from close range.
However, not long after, Raiders managed to equalize with a stunning shot from Jake Collins, who curled it into the top left corner, impossible for Joe Stockton to get a hand to it.
Droitwich responded well and just minutes later Nathan Binner’s volley found looked to have regained Spa’s lead, but, luckily for Raiders, the offside flag denied the goal.
Raiders’ captain, Jordan Murphy, was shown a second yellow card half way through the second half after bringing Alex Dugmore down and was sent off.
Droitwich took full advantage of this and took the lead in the 82nd minute through a textbook Alex Dugmore header from a Cory Rudd corner.
Four minutes later, from another corner, Spa scored another goal to secure all three points. Jay Saunston’s volley was cleared off the line but
Ben Tilbury was there for the follow up and his powerful shot from a few yards out rifled into the net.
The win coupled with results of other games mean Droitwich have secured a play-off position with two games to go.
It adds to an incredible record for Andy Crowther’s side; in the last five years they have won automatic promotion twice and qualified for three play-offs!
Droitwich round off their League season this week with a trip to Westfields on Tuesday evening (ko 7.45pm) before the final game on Saturday, at Kingy's against Mangotsfield United (ko 3pm).
