Over 400 Droitwich fans made the trip to Hereford Pegasus on Sunday
afternoon to watch the Challenge Cup Final but unfortunately Spa
narrowly missed out on becoming champions after conceding a late goal.
Spa started the game slowly and it seemed as though the players nerves were
getting the better of them.
Pegasus took full advantage and within the first five
minutes they scored but luckily for Droitwich the off-side flag saved them.
However, Pegasus put the ball in the back of the net again in the 6th minute and
there was no offside flag saving Droitwich this time.
The goal came as Droitwich
defended a free kick but the ball landed right at Pegasus’ Jordan Williamson’s
feet who volleyed it into the top left corner.
The Spa started to improve their passing and managed to take control of the
game.
A James Lemon free kick was the first real chance at goal which Peggy 'keeper, Matthew Gwynne, did well to keep out including the two follow up
shots from James Baldwin & Cory Rudd.
The Saltmen were rewarded for their improvement of play with a goal.
The
equaliser came in the 22nd minute from Reiss Taylor-Randle who scored directly
from a corner kick.
Just two minutes later, Droitwich took the lead from the penalty spot.
James Lemon
was brought down in the box by Gwynne and Perry Moss converted
the spot kick meaning the Spa went into the break a goal up.
The start of the second half was end to end but neither team had a real chance
of scoring a goal. Pegasus stepped up their game in hopes of finding an
equaliser and The Saltmen needed another goal to keep their lead safe.
In the 68th minute Pegasus equalised as Joe Stockton’s initial save from a free
kick found the feet of Michael Burgess who put the ball in the back of the net.
As people were looking towards the possibility of a penalty shoot-out, Pegasus
scored took the lead with what proved to be the match winner when Morgan Ewing’s low shot from
outside the box went past Stockton’s outreached hand and into the bottom left
corner.
Droitwich worked desperately hard in the final 10 minutes to reply but time
ran out and the game ended 3-2, crowning Hereford Pegasus as champions.
The Spa are back in action on Tuesday night (KO 7:45pm) with a trip down to
promotion rivals Slimbridge, in what will be a massive game for both clubs.
