The Saltmen suffered their 6th defeat of the League season at Tuffley on Saturday.
Despite not being able to count on James Lemon, Reiss Taylor-Randle and the long-term injured Jack Davies, Josh Hurdman and Dom Rogerson, Spa started brightly and could have taken the lead within 20 seconds as Baldwin’s cross found Perry Moss who headed just wide.
Droitwich continued to dominate proceedings with Tuffley happy to sit back and absorb the pressure. After a deep free kick, Joe Stockton was forced into a decent save, but a poor clearance fell to leading scorer Karnell Chambers who finished emphatically from close range to break the deadlock on 13 minutes.
Rovers then got their tails up and had their best 15 minute spell of the game and could have extended their lead on 17 minutes had Kieran Alder been inspired with just Stockton to beat, after some excellent work by Corey Warrington.
The hosts didn’t have to wait long for a second goal, as Jay Sauntson gave the ball away, Chambers intercepted & raced clear of the Spa defence to finish clinically.
Droitwich got back in the driving seat and Cory Rudd brilliantly headed home Binner’s corner kick at the back post just before the half hour mark.
The Saltmen continued to press but were unable to break down a stubborn Tuffley back line.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Spa showing all the initiative going forward and dominating possession, just lacking an end product.
Alex Dugmore was unable to find the target after some determined play, and Robinson denied him soon after with another headed effort.
At the other end, Droitwich had Joe Stockton to thank for a great save to stop Harry Mustoe’s header in a rare Tuffley foray forward.
Anton Robinson was on hand to deny first Dugmore’s strike from range, then Cory Rudd when through 1v1. The home stopper produced more heroics after Dugmore hit the woodwork, Baldwin had a shot blocked and Charlie Tilley, just yards out was denied a certain goal by a miraculous flying save.
Ben Tilbury scored his 3rd goal in 2 games when his controlled finish from 20 yards evened up the scores as Rovers failed to clear their lines.
Within 5 minutes Tuffley were back in front as an unstoppable header from Mustoe gave Stockton no chance.
Spa kept pressing but Rudd, Dugmore and Moss were unable to find the back of the net, and when Charlie Tilley did in injury time, the linesman’s flag was raised to deny him. Rovers got their tactics spot on, but Spa will feel hard done by to not have earned at least a point.
The Saltmen now look forward to a run of three home games, starting on Tuesday night against play-off chasing Cirencester Town (ko 7.45pm).
