Droitwich Spa 5-2 Fairford Town

By Caitlin Valle

Droitwich saw themself through to the Semi Final of the Challenge Cup on Tuesday evening, a seasons' low crowd of 137 watching the 5-2 victory against Fairford Town.

The game began relatively slow, with Spa having an attempt go narrowly wide within 10 minutes, and it took 15 minutes for Fairford to have their first attack on goal, with ex-professional Chris Zebrowski unable to meet a dangerous cross.

However it was in the 26th minute that the deadlock was broken, as James Baldwin headed home his first goal for the club since his return, making it 1-0 to the Saltmen.

It didn’t take long at all for this lead to be doubled, with a stunning first time finish from Charley Tilley in the 33rd minute following a picturesque backheel from James Lemon - making it 2-0 and the first half closed at this score-line.

Droitwich made a lively start to the second period and Charlie Tilley headed home his second of the night and twelfth goal of the season following a pass from Perry Moss in the 51st minute giving the Saltmen a three goal lead.

In the 57th minute however, Fairford were able to pull a goal back after an unfortunate bit of scrappy play in the Spa box led to an own goal from Lewis Phillips to make the game 3-1.

Fairford continued to push, and saw a chance cleared off of the line in the 68th minute.

Spa’s luck ran out one minute later, as the Red Arrows pulled a second goal back to make it 3-2, as a corner found the head of the former Millwall, Torquay and Bristol Rovers man Zebroski who with his vast Football League experience made no mistake to set the game up for a nervy last 20 minutes.

Droitwich didn't have to worry though, as substitute Alex Dugmore, returning from injury after sustaining a knock at Corsham, made it 4-2 to restore Spa's two goal cushion in the 80th minute as he slotted home following a pass from Perry Moss - who claimed his second assist of the night.

A scrappy last 15 minutes followed this, but Dugmore popped back up to secure his brace in the 94th minute, getting on the end of a loose ball to make it 5-2 and simultaneously fire Spa into the Semi Final. Spa's leading scorer now has 15 goals in all competitions after 29 appearances.

Droitwich are back in action on the Saturday 28th February when Play-off chasing Cirencester Town visit Kingy's in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division.
