Droitwich Spa and Fairford Town meet on Valentines Day for the 3rd time this season (Saturday, ko 3pm), and we will see who has the biggest heart to progress to the Semi Finals of the Marsh Challenge Cup!
The Saltmen have won both League meetings so far (3-1 at Kingy's in August and a dramatic 2-3 injury time win at Fairford in December) however Town have had a shake up since then, as former Manager Jamie Reid stepped down after a 1-0 defeat at home to Corsham in the new year.
Reid's Assistant Sam Collier has now taken the reigns and added some new signings to his squad, which bared fruit almost immediately; a 2-0 defeat at Mangotsfield was followed by two fantastic away victories at 3rd placed Slimbridge (3-7) and last Saturday at 2nd placed Roman Glass (0-4); both results certainly did Droitwich a favour in the League, as Spa have two games in hand on 2nd placed Roman Glass, and are two points clear at the top.
Fairford have reached the Quarter Finals after wins over 2nd Division side Penn & Tyler's Green (8-0) and Division 1 side Cheltenham Saracens (4-0).
Interestingly, Town's away form is vastly better than their home form; 11 wins and 5 defeats away from their Cinder Lane home, scoring 40 goals and conceding 20 in 16 games!
11 of those goals have come in their last two away fixtures!
Droitwich go into the tie on the back of a convincing 4-0 home victory & performance over bottom side Cribbs, and Spa have lost twice in their last eight games.
The Saltmen have lost just 3 times at home in all competitions this season, and will be hoping to add another victory to that tally this coming Saturday and progress to the Semi Finals of the competition.
With several players returning from injury, Andy Crowther may be faced with a selection headache, yet it remains to be seen whether the Spa boss will go full-strength in a bid to progress in the Marsh Cup with the Saltmen being in a strong position in the League table.
