Late Lemon leveller seals Saltmen's promotion

Droitwich Spa played out the biggest game in their history, and in the end succeeded thanks to an equaliser deep in to injury time.
The point earned sealed promotion to the Midland Football League Division 1 - a first for the town of Droitwich Spa to have a side that high up the National Football Pyramid.

Spa also recorded one of their biggest ever crowds - 268 people surrounded KGPF and the vast majority to cheer the hosts on.

Droitwich started much the better side with Alvis rarely breaking into their half for the first half an hour.
Good chances fell to Nick Seabourne and James Lemon, however the best of which fell to Max Crisp who from a matter of yards out somehow put a header wide of the post.
James Wardle also had to be at his best on two occasions to keep the hosts out.

Then, on 40 minutes came the sucker punch. The Tankmen broke down the right thanks to excellent hold-up play from Dildale Linton. The frontman teed up Corrie Powell who took a touch inside before rifling a low drive into the bottom corner from th edge of the box.

For the vast majority of the 2nd half, the game didn't live up to the Saltmen's intensity early on as they found great difficulty in trying to break down a stubborn and well organised Alvis rear guard.

Matt Oliver at the other end was also relatively untroubled, however Alvis always carried a threat with Pidgeon's pace up front.

The visitors should have made it 2-0 on the hour mark, when home 'keeper Matt Oliver was adjudged to have picked up a "pass back" from Mike Seeley.
An indirect free kick was awarded a few yards out, but a combination of Oliver & Max Crisp's enthusiastic blocking snuffed out the treat.

As the game went on Droitwich pushed the visitors further back, but chances were few and far between. Seabourne spurned three half chances by blazing wide whilst in promising positions, and Burgess's free header was tame and easily collected by Wardle.

Jamie Smith then hit a thundering long range drive which forced Wardle into an excellent save.

With time running out, desparation & goal-mouth scrambles insued - Crisp, Finch and Lemon all couldn't get their shots away before the ball was hacked clear.

But then, three minutes into injury time - just as the game seemed to be up, a deep cross from Smith was headed back across goal and James Lemon was there to stroke the ball home from 6 yards out to cue pandemonium in the crowd - The Saltmen had done it!

An excellent season was capped off in the best possible way at the last minute by a player who has had a torrid time with injury after netting over 40 goals last term.
Spa can now sit back and enjoy an extended pre-season to prepare for life in Division 1, whilst four sides battle for the second promotion spots over the next few weeks.
