Spa back on track at Hollywood Road

The Saltmen got back to winning ways on a glorious afternoon at Sutton United.

As the sun shone, the game had a pre-season feel to it and also lacked any real intensity from both sides, especially after Droitwich had netted their second goal.

The visitors started on the front foot and Seabourne's header went narrowly over whilst utility man Andy Crowther - today filling in at centre midfield - had a shot go wide.

They didn't have to wait long for the break-through though - Jamie Smith's cross-shot from 20 yards eluded everyone including the goalkeeper to ripple the net in the far corner.

Spa kept on pressing as Matt Oliver was untroubled throughout the first period - Mike Seeley's powerful close range shot was fired straight at 'keeper Marc Moore and Seabourne, who for the majority of the game was well marshalled by Jamie Hunter twice fired wide when being put through by Burgess and Bridges respectively.

The hosts rarely threatened, however they did have a penalty shout turned down when Peter Bromley appeared to have been nudged in the back as Sutton enjoyed more possesion as the half wore on.

Droitwich came flying out of the blocks in the second half and Louis Bridges came close before Seabourne extended the Saltmen's lead with the half just 7 minutes old.
He dispossesed Hunter 30 yards from goal, strode forward and confidently slipped the ball under Moore.

From then on the game peetered out rapidly with few chances - certainly at the home end - the best of which fell to Seabourne whose shot on the turn went wide when Bridges was questionnably in a better position.

Sutton enjoyed more possesion and pobably should have turned the game on it's head as Oliver was certainly the busier of the two 'keepers.

Twice the Droitwich stopper saved brilliantly from substitute Mark Mason, and another impressive denial when a deflected shot which ricocheted off Matty Hunt was tipped around the post.

Nevertheless, a hugely important three points was earned as Droitwich struggled to break out of second gear whilst Sutton's season draws to a close with little to play for.

Droitwich are not back in action until the week commencing 10th April for disputably the most important week in their 32 year history - on Tuesday 11 April (ko 7.30pm) they travel to Paget Rangers and on Saturday 15 April the season finishes as they host probable champions Alvis Sporting at KGPF (ko 3pm).
