Professional performance lifts Saltmen to the summit

At a rain soaked Field Lane, Spa put in a professional performance to down their lowly hosts in the first half.

The game itself was not much of a spectacle until the opening goal - a few half chances for Gunter, Seabourne and Molloy, however had Lemon been alert after some mis-communication between himself and Seabourne, Spa could have taken the lead sooner.

The visitors duly opened the scoring on the half hour mark - some good work down the right from Brighton who fed Seabourne. His low cross eventually found it's way to Gunter on the edge of the area. He cut inside and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

The game cam alive abit more with the Saltmen having the wind in their sails and the hosts arguing between themselves. Molloy came close firing across goal as did Lemon, but the next best chance fell to Hampton whose long ball tactics had been ineffective. The forward forced a smart save from Oliver, but the rebound was fired well over the bar.

Lemon made it 2-0 for Droitwich from Smith's deep free kick which found an unmarked Nick Seabourne - his powerful header fell to Lemon's feet and he smashed home to give the Saltmen a deserved lead going in to the break.

The second half was even less of a spectacle than the first despit the endeavour of both sides to play football in difficult conditions.

Droitwich could and should have increased their lead on numerous occasions - Crisp, Burgess, Gunter and Seabourne all should have done better when i promising positions whilst Jamie Smith tested the home 'keeper from range and Jack Brighton's free kick went just the wrong side of the post.

Hampton should have pulled one back but a superb reaction save low down to his left from Matt Oliver in the Spa goal denied the hosts from close range to preserve the lead and clean sheet.

Spa defended well on the whole but just tended to be let down by their final ball. A decent three points and second clean sheet in a row as Droitwich rise to the league summit.
