Convincing win for Spa

The 172 in attendance at Kingy's on Saturday were treated to a goal fest and one of the best performances of the season, as Droitwich ran riot in the first half to overcome a Chelmsley side who suffered a 7th defeat in 8 games.

Spa started the game quickly and could have been 2-goals up in the opening 5 minutes. First Nathan Binner's free kick was millimeters from being headed in by Cory Rudd, and Josh Hurdman found the side-netting from close range.

It was the visitors however who took the lead when a hopeful ball hoisted forward found Town's top scorer Oliver Jeeves who capitalised on a ricochet off the on -rushing Sayer to tap in to an empty net.

The lead lasted just 3 minutes as Binner was felled in the visitors' penalty area and Connor Collins stepped up to score from the penalty spot with just 8 minutes on the clock.

Cory Rudd then struck a trademark thunderbolt of a strike wide from 20-yards, but on 13 minutes the same player scored an uncharacteristic header from Binner's corner kick for his 2nd goal of the season.

Charlie Tilley's curling effort finished just the wrong side of the post befor Chelmsley 'keeper Liam Moss brilliantly denied Binner by tipping on to the cross-bar, and again 2 minutes later when he turned Spa's Perry Moss's effort around the post.

It was one way traffic as the Saltmen looked to increase their advantage, and on 29 minutes Josh Hurdman raced clear of the defence and off balance, hit a low strike from 20-yards in off the post for a 3-1 lead.
Worse was yet to come for Chelmsley when Collins scored his second of the afternoon after Perry Moss's incursion into the area and cross gave the Spa captain a simple tap-in, and just before half time Moss came to the rescue again to deny Collins when through one against one.

Droitwich kept up the high tempo into the second half and 7 minutes after the restart Collins netted his hat-trick and 19th of the season when a tidy move down the left flank served Spa's top scorer for another close range tap-in.

Liam Moss again saved Town and team mate Ryan Coley who almost diverted into his own net from Perry Moss's low cross, and Chelmsley were reduced to 10-men when Harry Manton was shown a straight red card for dissent on the hour mark.

Droitwich made two new signings in the week, and Collins left the field to a standing ovation to be replaced by debutant Richard Smith.
He made an almost instant impact when his flicked header set Hurdman up, but the Spa youngster fired wide when well placed, and then Moss produced a fine on-handed save to deny Smith a debut goal.

From the resulting corner, Alex Dugmore connected to give Droitwich a 6-1 lead on 67 minutes.

Smith was again frustrated by Moss, twice, and Hurdman again couldn't find the target after good work from another new signing, Lucas Edmonds, down the right.
Edmonds returns to the club after 4 years having gone through Droitwich's development sides.

Both new signings could have got their names on the score-sheet on the 79th minute, as Edmonds hit the cross-bar from close range, Moss saved Smith's follow up and Hurdman blazed over the bar.

Chelmsley offered little going forward all afternoon, but did manage a second goal when Alfie Chatwin netted a consolation with 5-minutes to play, but there was still time for Droitwich to spurn three more good chances for Edmonds (twice) and Hurdman.

With the emphatic win, Spa put some breathing space between themselves (3rd) and the play-off chasers, with games in hand still to play.

Next up, Stapenhill visit Kingy's on Saturday 24th February (ko 3pm) before Andy Crowthers' side start a busy and challenging March.
