Late Hinckley goals steal all 3 points

The Saltmen suffered just their second home League defeat of the season against leaders Hinckley AFC at Kingy's on Saturday.

The game summed up Droitwich's season so far, with enforced changes due to injuries and individual errors which ultimately cost Spa taking something from this encounter, and the chances of claiming automatic promotion further reduced.

On Non-League Day, the fixture pitted the two highest scoring sides in the Division against each other, with the best home and away records respectively however the game was tight, with few chances and not much of a spectacle for the 331 spectators present.

The visitors started brightly and within two minutes a tidy move down the left hand side culminated in a low cross which Jack Edwards' first time effort came back off the crossbar and cleared to safety.

However, with four minutes on the clock a Tom Weale free kick evaded everyone, hit the post and Kyron Green couldn't miss from close range as he tapped in the rebound.

Edwards had another great chance on 6 minutes to add to the visitors' lead but he put a close range header straight in to Ollie Sayers' arms.

Droitwich started to settle and get in to the game, and on 14 minutes Alex Dugmore thought he had equalised with a trademark header from a corner but the match official disallowed the goal for a presumed foul.

The Saltmen didn't have to wait long for an equaliser as Charlie Tilley was on hand to turn the ball in from close range on 19 minutes, and just 3 minutes later the Spa midfielder was brought down in the box and Connor Collins made not mistake from the penalty spot.

The rest of the encounter was a cagey affair after an all action opening 20-minutes; the only chances of note fell to the visitors where Edwards was again guilty of missing a decent chance when he headed over, before Sayer made a fine save low-down just before the break to keep Droitwich's slender advantage.

The second half followed a similar fashion, and Droitwich defended well to frustrate the league leaders. The first opportunity came on the hour mark for Edwards but Sayer again saved well to deny him.

Droitwich posed no real threat going forward in the second half, both Connor Collins and Perry Moss were replaced in quick succession after picking up knocks, replacement Lucas Edmonds having the best opportunity but he headed wide when well positioned.

Captain Daniel Fraser should have equalised for Hinckley, but he blazed his effort over with just Sayer to beat.

Just as the game looked to be petering out with Droitwich settling in to defend their lead, a hopeful ball into the box from 35 yards out by substitute Brady Middleton looked to be a routine catch for Sayer, but the ball slipped through his hands and into the net for an unexpected Hinckley equaliser on 84 minutes, and another substitute Declan Somel settled the contest just 2 minutes later with another close range tap in to give the visitors all three points.

Droitwich will both need and want to put this game to the back of their minds quickly, and they are next in action on Tuesday night with a difficult trip to play-off chasing Wednesfield (ko 7.45pm) before yet another testing visit to Bilston Town on Saturday, who also have play-off aspirations (ko 3pm).
