Spa 2nd half backlash wins all three points

The Saltmen made it 4 wins in a row on Saturday afternoon against Heather St John's at Kingy's. The win ensured that Spa reach the summit of the Midland Football League Division 1 midway through October.

Droitwich started the game brightly and carved out numerous chances in the opening 10 minutes; Perry Moss forced a good save out of Tyler Williamson from just a few yards out on 2 minutes, and then some tidy passing around the visitors back-line set Charlie Tilley through on goal but again Williamson was on hand to tip it around the post.

Heather and the Divisions' leading scorer Kyle Jardine had a great opportunity to give Saints the lead, but his effort was way off target when well positioned.

Another chance fell to Connor Collins but his header from Lemon's cross lacked enough power, and then his low cross when beating the offside trap for his strike partner was too powerful.

Against the run of play, on 14 minutes, Joel Chadwick spilled a cross from a Heather corner which was then only half cleared, but in the first of three fantastic goals Hopewell pummelled a fierce drive from 20 yards which rocketed into the roof of the net.

The goal took the wind out of Spa's sails who were sloppy in possession, poor positionally and lacked creativity from that point until the break.

Heather could and should have taken advantage with any one of their numerous great opportunities that all went begging.
Jake McLeary had all the time in the world with only Chadwick to beat, but he put his effort wide of the post before Jardine found himself just yards out and in acres of space, but Chadwick denied him with a point blank save.

Droitwich felt they had a good case for a penalty when Sam Hurdman appeared to be tripped when he raced on to a through ball with only Williamson to beat, but the referee showed the Spa man a yellow card for simulation. Hurdman was subsequently stretchered off the pitch with 10 minutes of the first half left to play.

Heather did extend their advantage just before the break when some haphazard passing out from the back from Droitwich culminated with Heather debutant Jake Finnerty's precise 40-yard finish looping over a stranded Chadwick and in to an empty net.

No doubt some stern words in the home dressing room at the break and Spa came out all guns blazing.
Within two minutes of the restart, the arrears were reduced when Charlie Tilley finished well from close range after tidy footwork from Moss.

The returning Jack Davies then fired wide with his powerful drive from the edge of the area, then on 57 minutes Tilley showed great determination to nick the ball from Hopewell who was adjudged to have brought him down in the area.
Collins stepped up to make no mistake from the resulting spot kick and the scores were level with 30 minutes to play.

Spa took the lead for the first time in the game when a corner was cleared as far as Moss who took a touch and rifled in a fine precision strike into the bottom corner from 20-yards to send most of Kingy's into delirium!
Droitwich could have added to their lead were it not for some great last defending to deny Collins, Moss and Roland Krol.

The Saints only noteworthy chance of the second half fell to Jardine, who should have done much better with his free header 10-yards out which went wide.

The immense long throwing ability of Kai Thomas also gave Droitwich problems, but the visitors couldn't capitalise on their late pressure and Spa won an important 3 points from a 2-goal half time deficit.

Next up, Andy Crowther's men host Bewdley Town on Tuesday night in the Worcestershire Senior Cup (ko 7.45pm)
