Spa bounce back from Vase defeat

The Saltmen got back to winning ways in the Midland Football League on Bank Holiday Monday with a 1-3 win at Coton Green.

After the thumping at home to Bilston in the FA Vase which left Droitwich without Connor Collins and Josh Hurdman (injured), the Saltmen started the game quickly and Luke Molloy broke through the home defence just seconds in but his shot flashed across the face of goal.

Droitwich dominated the early exchanges and Charlie Tilley was denied by Duncan Van den Top as his attempted chipped was well plucked out of the air by the back-pedalling Green stopper, before the returning James Lemon hit an effort on the turn wide and Tilley's ferocious drive from the edge of the area went over.

Coton's first chance of the game fell to Harry Dixon after he dispossessed Jack Brighton, but Joel Chadwick got down well to save.
From the resulting corner, a routine catch for Chadwick was spilled and the ball fell to veteran home goal-scorer Matt Gardner who tapped in from yards out to give the Staffordshire side the lead against the run of play.

Droitwich continued to press and didn't have to wait long for an equaliser as the ever dependable Alex Dugmore rose highest at the back post to head in.
James Lemon could have given the Saltmen the lead but his chip when through 1v1 against the onrushing Van den Top went just over.
Then Perry Moss's first time volley also narrowly cleared the cross-bar from 20 yards out.

Spa did get their noses in front when Charlie Tilley netted his 6th goal in 7 appearances this season; the midfielder picked up on a loose ball, drove in to the box and hit a powerful drive under Van den Top on 32 minutes.

With 5 minutes to go before the break, Spa's ill-advised high line was caught out as Harry Dixon raced clear, and Gavin Podmore, in an attempt to win the ball, brought Dixon down. Being the last man, the referee duly showed him a straight red card so Droitwich played the second half with 10-men. Roland Krol was sacrificed for Scott Braiden-Smith.

The numerical advantage spurred Coton on, but they were unable to create any meaningful chances until the 77th minute, when a fine run from deep and low drive by Harry Howard forced Chadwick in to a good save low down to his right.

Droitwich looked assured at the back, and created numerous chances themselves; Lemon was denied well by Van den Top, then Luke Molloy's free-kick came back off the cross-bar, and he later fired over when well positioned.
Spa were getting closer to extending their advantage as the game wore on as Lemon first headed over the bar, then Van den Top produced a fine double save to deny him with 10 minutes remaining.

The Saltmen skipper wasn't to be denied however, and on 90 minutes he sealed all three points thanks to some great work from Charlie Tilley down the left flank teed him up for a close range finish.

Droitwich are next in action on Saturday when we travel to newly promoted and high flying Allscott Heath (ko 3pm).
