Hard earned point on the road for Spa

The Saltmen came away from Crown Meadow with a point on a fine Wednesday evening in Shropshire, from a cagey affair against an unbeaten AFC Bridgnorth.

It was the hosts who started the game quicker, and within 2 minutes Matt Dean had come close after an incursion down the right hand side.

The Saltmen gradually got in to the game and had a spell of 20 minute dominance, however were unable to create any clear cut chances despite getting in to some promising positions. Alex Dugmore came closest with a near post header that went narrowly wide whilst Collins tested Ryan Cheshire in the home goal and Perry Moss had his goal ruled out for offside.

The momentum swung back to the home side though, and Dean's long range effort went narrowly wide having found Chadwick off his line, then Captain Charlie Swingwood's effort hit the crossbar after a deep corner before Bridgnorths' most dangerous player on the night, Luke Morris, broke the offside trap but was denied by the feet of Joel Chadwick.

The deadlock was broken by the Shropshire side on 42 minutes when the ball fell kindly for Morris after some hesitant defending with Spa pushed high up the pitch. The winger brought the ball forward before releasing a tidy finish in to the bottom corner.

Droitwich started the second half on the front foot, and Perry Moss almost evened up the score-line on 48 minutes, however just 3 minutes later Connor Collins out-muscled his marker to run on to a through ball which he got to just ahead of the onrushing Cheshire to stab in to the top corner to equalise.
The hosts were always a danger on the counter attack, but substitute Roland Krol made an almost instant impact when his effort forced a diving save from Cheshire, and from the follow up Charlie Tilley's low drive narrowly went the wrong side of the post.

Luke Morris then had a great opportunity to re-take the lead for his side when through one-on-one, but his early effort went wide of the mark.

Back at the other end, Charlie Tilley's effort was well saved again by Chadwick, but on recuperating the loose ball, the Spa midfielder was clumsily taken down and the match official pointed to the penalty spot. Connor Collins made no mistake to give Spa the lead for the first time of the evening with 15-minutes remaining.

Unsurprisingly Bridgnorth pushed for an equaliser and they didn't have to wait long to get it; a hopeful ball hoofed forward was mis-judged by Chadwick, Morris crossed into the area and in a desperate attempt to clear the ball, Lewis Phillips fouled in the area and the referee once again awarded a spot kick.

Veteran Mark Danks stepped up and made no mistake sending Chadwick the wrong way on 80 minutes.

Both sides had half chances before the end, but may feel that a point was a fair reflection of a tight contest.

On Saturday, The Saltmen are on the road again with a trip to Paget Rangers, who are always a tough opposition at home.
