Spa win County Cup for 4th time
It was hard work, but eventually Droitwich Spa overcame a resilient Malvern Town Reserves in the County Cup Final at Pershore.
The strong wind played a big part in proceedings and contributed to a poor game of football which won't live too long in the memory of the 250 odd supporters who were present.
Droitwich looked nervy through-out the first half, but did create the best chances, as early on Ben Tilbury hit the frame of the goal from the edge f the area, scooped another powerful effort over the bar, and Jack Allerton also missed the target when well positioned.
Malvern took a hold of the game forcing a string of corners, and took the lead on 21 minutes when matt oliver attempted to claim the ball at the near post, but the strong wind changed the direction of the ball which ended up in the Droitwich net direct from a corner.
Neither side created much until the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, however Spa struggled to create too many chances whilst at the other end matt oliver was a virtual spectator as the game petered out into a scrappy midfield battle.
Mark Owen and Wayne Oliver made three changes in quick succession by bringing on Brad Burgess, Max Crisp and Dan Cottrill, and this seemed to breathe some much needed new life into the game.
The equaliser soon followed as Ben Tilbury's free kick was once again helped by the the wind, which carried the ball through the Malvern 'keeper and into the net.
Spa then turned the screw and had Town pinned back in their own half for the majority of closing stages, and Matty Hunt rose highest from Jonny Brookes's deep free kick to head home at the near post with a little under 10 minutes to go to spark wild celebrations from the Droitwich fans.
